I've been gigging my VT Bass into the front end of a Mesa WD800 with my Subway 215, or Bergantino Hathor 1544.

A previous owner had installed 4-ohm Peavey Black Widow 18" in my 1966 Ampeg B-18n when I bought it. But the amp sounded a lot better after I replaced it with a 15" JBL D140 with a homemade plywood (doughnut) Adaptor. I also made similar doughnut adaptor to install a 15" Eminence Basslite 2515...

Speaking of amp overhang: I've never been comfortable gigging my D-180 or 400+ without a rack case. Some other cases might be narrower or wider, but my old Pearson case is 1-3/4" wider than my 215 Mesa Subway cab.

I agree with trying Lowbrow's suggestion. Another very-common possibility is a poor Shunt connection in your headphone jack. The purpose of that Shunt is to mechanically disconnect the speaker anytime you have headphones plugged in. Next time the amp malfunctions, try cycling a spare guitar...

Plugging your pedal into the "Power Amp In" jack of the SVT-II (or SVT-2 PRO) amps would basically be the same thing as using an SVT 300 poweramp. Although I'd expect both them to be a few pounds heavier. The SVT 2-PRO would have the advantage of having a Master Volume knob. The SVT-II does not...
