    Double Bass Excerpt videos

In terms of the recit, it's hard to say exactly what you need to do with it. The excerpt varies greatly among different orchestras; there's even one conductor (I can't remember who) who strongly feels that the recits should be played in the same tempo as the section played by the winds...

    Double Bass Vibrato EFF WORD!

An off-topic question to the poster: Can you flex your left arm (bicep) without lifting anything?

    Double Bass Size matters! (7/8 v 3/4)

yeah no reason to change from an instrument you already like unless you feel that you have the need and money to get a better one. As for size, i'd say it really depends on YOUR size. You will adapt your technique to different string lengths, but as with all things, there are advantages and...

Double Bass Bach Cello Suite No.2 for grad school auditions?

I'm a big fan of the second suite minuettes. Although playing them at pitch would be tricky, but I think its doable.

Double Bass Playing in tune with several basses together

I've played in orchestras for about 6 years now, and in the past three years i've been playing in orchestras with bigger sections. What i've found is that I notice my intonation a lot with a 2 person section, and less (though not significantly) in larger sections. I agree that larger sections...

Double Bass yet another thread about french bowing

I've never seen the second grip either. IMO, i'd imagine its highly unstable and adds a lot of tension to your right hand. I would find it really hard to do spicatto or any bow stroke for that matter with the second grip.

    Double Bass Thumb soreness!

Didn't you ever get sore fingers in your right hand? All this callous-building stuff takes time. Regarding placement of thumb on the string, i've heard from many different teachers that it should be parallel with the bottom of your nail. I am a classical player, but it makes sense: the skin...

Double Bass Looking for interesting intermediate DB solo tunes

The storch hrabe etudes were the first thing that came to mind when I was reading this post, and I'm glad you came across them. They're good for mastering more basic things, which we all need to do. Not to say that they're easy, but they put the basics to the extreme. It isn't your etude that...

Double Bass Left hand/Right hand problems

Hey, so, lately in my practicing I've noticed that i'm having trouble separating what I do with my right hand from my left hand. For example, I have a hard time keeping my left hand relaxed as I put a little more emphasis on a note in my right hand. Because of this, I'm finding my vibrato to be...

Double Bass Practicing the dynamics and the articulations and blah blah blah

Well when you say that they ask for a more distinct sound between your piano and mezzo-forte (p and mf, respectively), you know that p=quiet and mf=kinda loud, but quieter than a forte? When I read your post, this was never established in terms of volume and it seemed like you were getting at a...

    Double Bass Ein Heldenleben Fingerings

Hey mike-- There are a lot of different fingerings, and I think i've learned about 3 different fingerings, and I hear that later in your career you'll know about 12. For that high C run (the third and fourth), i've started working on it this way E A D G A 4-1-4-2-+-3-1 The 1...
