What to tell wife when she asks how many basses you have

Next time try "One fewer than I really need."

    advice on lighting gear, please

Your solution will obviously depend very much on what you're trying to do. Front lighting on the band? Back lighting on the band? Up lighting behind the band? Effects or static lights around or behind the band? Effects lighting on the audience? If you need to cover front lighting on the...

    Anyone Dressing Up This Year?

Not dressing up here. And we haven’t had any trick or treaters since the last time we dressed up (years ago). I’d like to think it’s because there’s a big, crazy four-block-long block party up the street, so everyone goes directly there. But it may be the way we last handed out candy...

Unusual or Odd Songs That Were Pop Hits That You Would Not Think They Would Be

I can understand if this gets disqualified with the argument that it really isn't a song. But it definitely was a Top 5 hit in 1966. Now who can listen all the way through?

Need some home music production advice - from new DAW, sequencers to iPhone music creation.

A big +1 for using Reaper. And although it's inexpensive, I wouldn't call it "simple". Maybe simple to learn to use at a basic level, but it is a full featured DAW that runs with the big boys. Start there.

Generator party! Should we be afraid?

It's real and it's a power conditioner. But it's essentially a surge protector with a little noise filter. Put in 130 volts and it will put out 130 volts. Same with 105 volts. A real power regulator will accept high and low voltages but put out a constant 120 volts. Unfortunately, it will...

Generator party! Should we be afraid?

Make sure the generator is an inverter-based design, otherwise the power may be very noisey. If you have a power regulator, use it. At least use some quality surge protection. Add up your band's total wattage and add 30% -- that will be plenty unless you're running all the amps at full power...

So, we're a Classic Rock band....

We're also a dance and party band that does Mustang Sally and Brown-Eyed Girl, and the dance floor is always full. Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" is in our repertoire (a live version is even on our website), and it always, always gets a good response.

Keeping levels just under clipping when recording?

Record at a 24-bit depth. When recording digitally, don't focus on the headroom, focus on the noise floor. First I'm assuming your gear is good enough quality such that when you run just your interface into your computer with no source (no mic or instrument) into the interface, you have a...

Eden WT800: new love for an old head

Gotta agree. I use mine all the time with either one, two, or four (generally two, although I love shaking the walls with four) Acme 2x10s and a VT Bass in front. For a couple months this year I tried my Ampeg SVT-7 PRO, but I missed the Eden tone. The extra ten pounds are worth it.

Is there learn by ear software?

I use a DAW called Reaper. With it you can insert markers in precise locations, define loop sections, apply EQ to enhance the bass frequencies, and most importantly, slow it down without affecting the pitch. You can also change the pitch without slowing it down if your band plays a song in a...

    What does a compressor do?

There is no delay associated with the attack time. The attack time is the interval over which compression is applied. At the start of the attack interval, there is no compression. By the end of the attack interval, compression is fully applied. Similarly, the release time is the interval...

    gloves?

I've done it. Because of nerve damage in my left arm, my left hand becomes useless if it gets cold. We played an outdoor gig in the end of September, and it was a bit chilly. So I wore gloves on my fretting hand all evening. Yes, "gloves", plural -- a glove liner and a tight fitting glove...

    Using protection

First, $100 for protecting your hearing is a no-brainer. I won't practice or play a gig without mine. Regarding muffled sound, the filters in custom-molded plugs pass a reasonably even frequency spectrum, so there is no muffling of the sound.

DMX Controllers, MIDI Pedals, and Fade Times

Thanks everyone. I placed my order for DMXIS today. The foot control capabilities were really a deciding factor. I already have both a double foot switch and MIDI controller equipment, so the foot control, ease of programming, and price made it a somewhat easy choice. Over the many years...
