    Criminally commercially unsuccessful bands

    First one to come to mind was Hookfoot - basically Elton John's backing band in the early 70s. Their "solo" albums are superb. Caleb Quaye (Lead Guitarist) was admired by Eric Clapton, amongst others.

    Bass guitar with upright like tone?

    Have you tried a Ukulele Bass? (PAUSES FOR THE LAUGHTER TO DIE DOWN) I am serious! The floppy rubber strings seem to give the instrument a sound far closer to an upright than a bass guitar.
