This has probably been answered already somewhere in this thread, but I have a Chinese Sonic P and I just replaced the pickup with a MIM Fender Player II pickup for $50. I like the way it sounds but the tone control is not offering the contrast I would have expected... just a little rolloff on...

You have to remember too that in 1793 the prices of electric instruments were artificially depressed due to electricity not being commercially available until the 1880s. Man, I wish I'd bought a P bass back then.
FWIW, I have a Player (fretted) jazz bass and I put in a solderless 4-band Audere jazz bass preamp, with the stock pickups, and can basically get any tone I want. It did add a bit of weight but it's more than worth the tradeoff to me.
