I made my (very good) living as an engineer. A major regret is that I didn’t start playing when I was 4, like many of the excellent musicians I play with. But yesterday I was asked if I regret not having become a career musician. No way. Which is pretty tragic.

So when to change? I’ve had Thomastik Infeld flats on my Fodera Monarch for the last ~18 months. Playing maybe a couple of hours, several days a week, on that bass. Sounds great. Do I just keep going with them? At what point do I *need* to change, short of a string breaking?

Yup. People who show up, play, and don’t tip the band are a disgrace. I’m thinking of one not-very-good conga player who installs himself next to the drums for the entire jam set, and NEVER tips. It’s just bad behavior.

I always tip - usually $20 - for the house band at the jazz jam I do weekly. And I’m usually the one who walks round with the tip jar. I know how much the house band get paid - $150 between the 4 of them - so I think it’s very bad not to tip, whether you’re a jammer or spectator. No cover...
