It might just be me, but I would rather have a bass that is MY bass, then a copy of Paul Chambers bass. As hard as you try you will never be as good at being Paul Chambers as Paul Chambers was.

+1 for everything above but try taking things down a M2, m3 and M3. Most of the time these will be the transpositions you'll have to do.(for female vocalists) I don't think I've ever been asked to take a tune up a Perfect 4th.

are you playing with two drummers because you want to have two drummers in your band....or because you have two friends that are drummers......if its the latter I would suggest finding another solution.

you can get tips books ect. but in the end it all comes down to practice. so practice

I don't mean to discourage you but you would be surprised at the level of playing you will find in music schools, even among freshman. Showing that you are comfortable walking, that you understand chords, how to use them, and have some simple soloing ability will likely not be enough to get you...
