$500.00 to buy a "used" bass and amp to gig with.

Very interesting discussion. I won't be gigging in a near future, but the 500$ setup is also meaningful for a beginner.

New step achieved: had my first lesson. Humbling, but positive.

Just for fun, a selfie with my most familiar roaring piece of heavy metal. 7kg, somewhere around 14 pounds. I suspect the typical bari sax parts in Big Band and funk arrangements to be responsible for catching the low end worm. Think Tower Of Power....

The first time you went over 120 MPH (192km/h), you were in....?

Aston Martin DB6. A friend of my Dad. I was 12 years old. Almost no speed control by then. The first time I did it driving, in Germany, a BMW 325i, in ... 1993.

    Is age just a number?

Very interesting topic. Thanks for having launched it. I'm 58, and have been playing saxes in bands on and off for good 40 years, going from young to... less young, but mostly in jazz bands, a genre where grey hair are rather welcome. I currently play the bary sax in 2 big bands, one where I'm...

    After Gig ramp down

A 1 hour drive usually helps. Once home, a beer and either some music or a boring TV night program does the job.

There she goes, Yamaha TRBX305 of 2015. I assume no one wants to see the tiny Peavy "shoebox". Yamaha TRXB305 by BuDa posted Jun 23, 2017 at 1:21 PM Take 5 by BuDa posted Jun 23, 2017 at 1:21 PM

Thanks, happy to be here. Pictures ? Hey, it already appears on my avatar. I already found Scott's stuff. This guy is amazing, it all seems so easy... And as a longtime gigging sax player, I've got plenty of people around to jam with, and maybe also a coach to look over my beginnings.

For those with high end basses/gear

Day job in my case too. Got my first bass and amp yesterday, within the budget of 1 single saxophone mouthpiece, the universe I'm familiar with. I own (and play on gigs) a couple of pro level saxophones, which all together cost as much as a mid class car. I guess this is a pretty common...

Picked up my first bass today. I am stoked!!!!

So cool ! Congratulations. Got mine yesterday, almost the same, also used, also black, but with 25% more strings (and more weight ...). No hard case though, and no switch/knob plate anymore.

Thanks. First step achieved. Found a horn. A what ? Well, I'm gonna have to broaden my vocabulary. An axe ? In French we see nice words like "sucette" (lollipop) or "pelle" (shovel). A barely used Yamaha TRBX305, which will go through a tiny Peavy Micro Bass to start with. Crazy to start with 5...

Difference between precision bass and jazz bass

Great news ! And rather funny too. I was following this thread with attention, as I'm also starting from scratch. And guess what, I also went for a 5 string I found locally, a barely used Yamaha TRBX305. Voilà. No excuse anymore, lets start ... picking. Thanks to all of you.

"Try"... ? Hey, I've never played a string instrument before. How do you think I'm gonna be able to make any reasonable decision if a guy hands me a couple of basses in a shop ?
