    Stands

there is only one type of guitar stand that is safe to use: the ones that hang the instrument from the head stock...the weight of the guitar itself stabilizes the stand... the designers of anything else should be shot, as they are probably responsible for the loss of many good instruments...

Instrumental covers the audience will get into?

how can the "whole audience recognize" an instrumental song that originally had vocals?! most non-musicians hear the vocals and very little else, sad but true...unless you are playing background MUSAK for a dinner audience, you're gonna have it rough...

What bigger bands have you opened for??

my band once opened for the Ramones at a larger rock club in detroit...we were a heavy band that played with a lot of heat, and we didn't understand the hype surrounding this weird group of dudes...so many overlook the fact that live performance is a show, first and foremost...which we learned...

GIBSON LESPAUL MONEY BASS STUDID DEAL!?!?!

i would never buy a guitar without first playing it. there are just too many variables, they are not created equal, and you have no way of knowing if the instrument will suit your personal tastes... i think you should go to a music store, play all the basses that they have, and pick the one...

    semi-acoustic body repair

i just picked up a copy of a hofner violin bass made in japan by greco, circa late '60s, which has a crack in the body. the white binding is pulling away slightly from the arched back near the neck, on the curve below the strap post, a crack about 2 inches long accompanied by a hairline crack...

    Hondo 2 Bridge

hello mrfhe... i have seen the hondo 2 bass and know what the 3-pin bridge looks like...i've heard that the japanese companies made a lot of near-clones of american basses around that time, and that bridge setup is very close to the one that gibson used on their old eb3 basses...if you're...

    violin bass cracking, help!!!

just bought a hofner violin bass copy, and i've noticed an area about 2 inches in length where the finish is cracking and the arched back is pulling away from the edging, that white inlaid binding. it's up in the neck area, along the curve below the strap stud (makes me wonder if it wasn't the...

thanks for the input, guys, i bought the hofner copy...that italian job pictured, i remember years ago seeing felix pappalardi of 'mountain' perform with one of those...he got a pretty heavy sound out of it, i seem to recall...wonder whatever happened to felix... classic rocker

    How much does tonewood matter?

i have to disagree with MEKer and side with Debased. if there is anything i've learned from many years of playing it's that every instrument is different, and each has a unique sound, if you have the ears to listen. beyond the sound that a quality instrument creates, very little matters...

    violin bass, anyone?

i think glennw is right, that's an italian model i've heard about. this one is indistinguishable from the original hofner, except maybe for a few small details and of course the name on the head stock...

Peavey Foundation 80s - swamp ash??

i've heard that PV made a foundation bass in a natural finish, though i've never seen one. if it appears professionally polyurethaned, you can be pretty sure it's the real thing. i have a black foundation bass made in '86, and i believe the first year they were made was '85. you're right...

    violin bass, anyone?

an hour ago i came across a hofner "violin" bass copy, model eko, made by greco (japan), circa late 60's. it's a semi-acoustical electric bass with arched spruce top, all maple body and arched back, ebony fingerboard, double polarity twin pickups, 3 position tone selector. the neck is straight...
