i just picked up a copy of a hofner violin bass made in japan by greco, circa late '60s, which has a crack in the body. the white binding is pulling away slightly from the arched back near the neck, on the curve below the strap post, a crack about 2 inches long accompanied by a hairline crack that extends another 3 inches along the binding.
someone has recommended titebond II glue and application of a clamp, along with clear nail polish as a finisher. any other recommendations?
i'm also wondering if it's a good idea to drill tiny holes at each end of the hairline crack to alleviate stress and prevent its further progress, maybe put color matched filler in those holes afterwards...any thoughts on that?
i'm not a luthier, but i need to do the repair myself. thanks for your help!!
