I just ordered the MXR M87 bass compressor. Will be running it through a GK 700-RBII head and a Neo cabinet. I will post again once I got it and have played around a bit.

Personally I like your guitarists idea. Obviously the bar owners have gotten together and decided not to pay bands, so turn the tables. Damn glad I live in a city, not a problem here.

Saw some modded ones as well, but were more heavily modded. Many I saw on eBay have/had belt rashes on the back. I want a Ric because I like them. Don't get the whole modifying guitars thing.

Was looking at this. Good to know. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the single coil pups. I have a Mexican made P-Bass and doesn't hum as much. It can't be pedals, because I don't use any. Straight from the 4003 into the GK head. I love the sound of the Ric, but those single coils can be a pain...

Cables are all new. Power outlets, well at the clubs your choice is limited. Power supply is a furman power strip. Would a power conditioner be a better choice? As I was saying the hum/noise becomes more noticeable the closer I am to the amp.

Not in Chicago. Used Rics here go for almost new prices. Vintage are more expensive.

Best advice has already been given. Find a local reputable tech, preferably one who knows Rics. Reasoning being the truss system can be weird. I forget when they started using the dual truss rod system, but better safe then sorry. Also it does sound like the pickup is dead, or dying. Probably...

To answer original question....well can't really. Personally I don't get all the hype of Fender in general. The only Fender I like is the tele guitar. The bass just sound flat to me. No tone, no punch.

No one can answer that question for you. Why? Simply because we don't know what you like, what/who you listen to, generally only you know you. For $2000 you have plenty of room to play with. But if your a MM fan why would you want anything else? They are great basses. Playing Bass is not like...
