I'm a groove type player in a working cover band (corp gigs) and a blues band. I've figured out that I can get a decent sound out of almost any J-style or J-inspired active bass with any of the well-known preamps and pickups out there (Bartolini, LM3, J-retro, etc.). It does take me a little time with the bass to get familiar with coaxing those sounds out of each kind of preamp controls, but after that, I'm good to go.

So, the difference then for me is the comfort of the bass: thin neck, light weight, smallish body, good contours, no neck dive, good setup, low-ish tension on the strings.

If it is comfortable to play, I play it more, I play more confidently, I think more about music and less about fidgeting, and I sound better.

That's what's doing it for me right now. This puts Elricks, Laklands, and Sadowskys high on my list.

Thanks! Here's a fun fact for you about Senorita Skies...she doesn't wear rings (at least not yet). Because she does fairly physical stuff at her day job and she's an artist by avocation, she's not usually a jewelry wearer.

...we'll see if this changes the dynamic.

Playing rhythm changes in keys other than Bb, and working on a chord melody version of My Favorite Things on a 4 string electric. oh, and a few polyrhythms that i tend to rush really badly to the point of losing the groove, and just generally sitting behind the beat a bit more, it is going to be summer after all, lets keep it laissez faire....

In keeping with the OP's topic, what is/are my current obsession/s? They are currently sated, however I am looking forward to the DC GTG next month to see if anything pops up.

Fanned frets get me going, 5 inch drivers feed my ardour, I suppose if Sheldon Dingwall makes a Prima Artist that weighs 3.5 lbs and Phil Jones makes a 24/5 cabinet under 40 lbs. that would be about the only thing to get my GAS going again.....
