Any multieffects processor would work out great. I use a POD X3 in my worship band and its great. Experiment with as may sounds as you can. I often switch sounds during sections of songs for what I call "ambient atmosphere" You never know what works for you and your band.

For small venues, (aka wine bars and bistros) I use a JBL Eon 12" Powered speaker. Run my bass through a Sansamp DI and its the best DB amp sound for 300 bucks and 15lbs. Got the idea from my old bass professor.

It maybe a little over your budget, but the GK 150E is fantastic. Lightweight, durable, and can really deliver a good DB sound.

My luthier just uses thin aircraft wire. It should be a quick fix and not too much money. Most shops should let you try out different wires to find one you like.
