Asking the Drummer to Play at Lower Volume - How has that gone for you?

Opposite problem - recently joined a metal band. For first half of rehearsal the guitar players kept trying to convince drummer to play louder. Even used extra mics to try to amplify his sound. Finally after an hour of this (and screwing my earplugs deeper into my head), I suggested maybe they...

Do you need a backup bass.

I’m going to a casual audition next week, just playing 4 songs. And I will have a second bass in trunk of car. So yes.

Names of bands you were/are in

I’m a bit shy, so I will only offer my favourite band name, playing 90’s grunge covers in around 2017: “Twilight of the Flannel Gods”. I think we only gigged once under the name, people didn’t think it was as funny as we did.

That one random song your cover band does that nobody else does.

Good thread, some cool tunes mentioned. I know we’ve got a few that aren’t commonly played - but I would go with She’s Kerosene by The Interrupters from just a few years ago. Fun and fast, haven’t heard another band do it.

    Favorite bass youtuber?

Coversolutions - if you're trying to quickly learn new tunes on bass for your cover band, this guy has often already done it, and includes tab with his videos.

    Favorite short scale bass

Didn’t see it mentioned on thread, so here is a Danelectro 56 that I gig, short and weighs nothing.

    Where do you stand?

Left of drummer, actually in almost every band / gig / rehearsal situation I can think of. In fact it would probably mess me up to be right. I’m right handed, so are most drummers. Agree on headstock out of cymbals and eye contact as good reasons why this makes sense, although not sure I’ve...

    Bass for bad back.

Had some back pain last year and bought a Danelectro 56. Cheap, light, short scale, nice raw sound with the lipstick pickups.

What do you typically get paid per gig?

$100 a man, 4 piece cover band, weekends at dive bars around Toronto area, 3-4 hour gigs.

What's the best compliment you've ever received about your playing?

“Do you know how to play Far, Far Away?” :D

How many pedals do you use on a job?

It varies - but currently 4. Tuner, Compression (always on), Distortion and a Drop pedal (band does lots of 90’s drop tuned songs). Will add the Zoom B3 if we’re doing songs that really require something different (chorus, delay, etc).

    Danelectro Owners Club

I'm a new owner of this 56 bass. So I guess I can join the club?
