    American Original 50s or 60s P Bass?

I have both, a 57 reissue with maple fingerboard and a 62 with a rosewood fingerboard. They were both made is early 1983 and are very nice. Here are some of the qualities I’ll share. I play with the pickup cover removed and the 57 has the raised pole on the “A” sting that gets in the way for my...

Double Bass William Lewis and Sons

I have a William Lewis & Sons carved bass that is similar to a Juzek. Most likely from the 50’s from Markneukirchen Germany. A very nice bass that plays and sounds very good. Mostly used for jazz with a Fishman wheel.

Why such fanatical love for the Precision bass?

Although simple in design, it is vesitile for most situations. With flats and fingers or with a pick, I can achieve 4 different tones with my Mesa Walkabout Scout

Help! Is this a geniune Fullerton reissue P?

This does not seem to be a Fullerton reissue. I have two and they were made in early 83. They came with covers installed and case candy. The think the decal is in the wrong position too. Also, I don't think they originally came in black. I have read that bass production did not ramp up until...

Fender no longer using rosewood ?

I have an ebony fingerboard on my 63' Jazz Bass that I had installed in 1974 after a botched refret damaged the original Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. It currently has frets that Roger Sadowsky installed in 1991

    Double Bass Giant Steps basslines/etude?

Nice approach. It is good to remember that Coltrane had a descending whole tone scale (B, A, G, F, Eb...) and most of his songs where he superimposed the progress used this device. The descending whole tone scale provides a certain song character under the improviser. Of course you should keep...

Double Bass What strings did ray brown use?

I think Ray played Spiro Mittels. He played gigs several times a week and practiced in the daytime. So his chops were strong and he got a big sound. He liked a Polytone Mini Brute III for amp

What kind of strings do you have on your J Bass?

I use DR Sunbeams 45-105. These are nickel wrap and have less brightness then the stainless strings.

Double Bass Middle Finger Placement in German Bow Hold

I recommend Fred Zimmmerman's book on double bass. He tells you to tilt the bow away from the bridge when the next note is higher, and tilt towards the bridge when the next note is lower. It helps to improve the quality of the bowed sound your are creating.

    Double Bass Old Juzek bass

There were several luthier shops in Markneukirchen that made basses ordered by Juzek and others. I have one imported by William Lewis & Son. Mostly three levels, carved with premium wood, carved with non-figured wood, and plywood. Many carved back and some flat back. If in good repair these are...

    1x 18 folded cab build?

I don't like the folded horn cabinets. They do not sound great on stage and are designed to throw the sound in a large venue setting. If you play clubs, the rooms are generally too small for a folded horn cabinet. I found you lose bass presence on stage and it sounds muddy.
