Double Bass Playing Through Simandl One Page at a Time

Don’t worry brother, I’ve got the oldness too. Mine just hasn’t progressed as far as yours yet… 😂

Double Bass Playing Through Simandl One Page at a Time

You all have inspired me to dig this out. Mine is also essentially just a pile of pages… certainly no comparison with Don, Neil, or any of you other codgers…

Double Bass YOU - on youtube (DB forum thread)

Of all the baroque composers, Buxtehude has the name that is the most fun to say aloud. Buxtehude! Among the classical composers I believe that Carl Ditters Von Dittersdorf holds that distinction… Anyhoo, great stuff.

Double Bass YOU - on youtube (DB forum thread)

Here’s another video from our Blue Llama hit back in January. This is a tune by our drummer, it is the title cut from our third album, AND actually has a bass solo… enjoy.

Thanks! We’ll be down your way in May if you’re around. We’re playing at Schwartz Point in Cincinnati, and the Ginger Rabbit in Columbus in mid May. The 16th and 17th I think.

    Double Bass Mr. Carter

I must confess to being quite a fan of Ethan Iverson, specifically as a member of The Bad Plus and The Billy Hart Quartet. It takes all kinds I guess… I do appreciate your usage of the word “dullard” though.

I will confess that I am not a huge fan of Mr Carter post 60’s Miles Quintet, but he IS the most recorded double bassist in history. This can’t be a...

In the spirit of the beginning of this thread, here is an unaccompanied bass intro (plus the tune, Slow Brew) from a Signal Quartet performance at the Blue Llama in Ann Arbor back in January. I have to say that, for me, an improvised bass intro can be really hit or miss but FWIW I like this one...

Double Bass Slonimsky's Thesaurus - Pablo Held

This is not correct, modes of limited transposition are exactly that. A whole tone scale has one mode and 2 transpositions. A half step/whole step (or octatonic scale) has two modes and 3 transpositions etc… It is 100% worthwhile to explore, however I find the book itself to be less important...

Double Bass Jazz - Now Playing

Listening to this for the last couple days. I love the hook up between Ben Street and Billy. What a great band.

    Double Bass Mr. Vitous

Liner photo from Trio Music (w/Chick Corea and Roy Haynes). I especially love his playing on Trio Music Live in Europe. He had something special with Roy that no one else had IMHO.
