Based on OP comments this is what came to mind for me as well. The Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn is no longer in production, but they pop up used under $1,000 USD. Essentially a P bass body with jazz neck profile. In my experience the Skyline series are at least on par with the Entry level US Fender...
