I don't like anything!! Can anyone just build me a custom head?!?

My head of choice? Ampeg SVPCL with a Crown power amp. Liquid sound of an Ampeg tube amp with clean solid state power, light enough to pick up with my pinkie finger. Want more portable? GK Fusion 500 or 800.

Tube power sections, what am I missing?

My thoughts exactly re: bigger surface, gave me more scope in tone, as finger position changes tone.. The maple one is a custom built fretless (I built it) and the sunburst is a Fender deluxe Am. Jazz 4 string.

Tube power sections, what am I missing?

Yes, it's a piece of teak.. I'm criticized for modifying a deluxe American Jazz, but hey, it's the way I play! BTW, here's a shot showing how lightweight the head is..

Tube power sections, what am I missing?

Interesting discussion; for me, weight is an issue, so I went with an SVPCL and Crown (1500W) power amp. I love the tone I get and the complete head only weighs 22lbs. The choice of tubes in the preamp have a LOT to do with the tone. So far I've experimented with EH, JJ, Tung-Sol, Mullard.. my...

    Ampeg SVPCL Users Thread

Have SVPCL with the following tube complement (into a Crown XLS1500): V1 Mullard 12AX7 V2 JJ ECC 82 V3 Mullard 12AX7 V4 JJ ECC 82 so far, my favorite sound from this preamp.. However, the last two gigs it started dropping the balanced line out feed, now it's intermittent. (amp feed is...

    Subwoofer for mixing/monitoring systems

My son has a great music production/mixing/monitoring system, but it lacked really deep bass response. He purchased a commercially made subwoofer for about $400, and after hooking it up, was terribly disappointed it rolled off sharply at about 50Hz, so would NOT reproduce even low E on a...

    Ampeg SVP-CL tube choice

UPDATE: Indeed, one of the JJ ECC83's was hosed, although tested "good" on a simple tube tester. In V1 position, no sound out of the preamp at all. Tapping the EH 12AU7's triggered microphonics, so I swapped them out for the JJ ECC82's, and hopefully that cures the crackling. Tone and gain are...

    Ampeg SVP-CL tube choice

Nope, I kept the tubes in the correct positions, but did not try both 83's in the V1 position. I'm assuming that is where most of the gain is produced. I'll test the JJ's before I return them..

    Ampeg SVP-CL tube choice

I am using an Ampeg SVP-CL bass preamp, which has begun to crackle and pop intermittently while warming up. Thinking it was a tube going, I tested them all (V1-V4 / EH 12AX7, Tung Sol 12AU7, EH 12AX7, Tung Sol 12AU7) - and all tubes tested OK. I changed them out for JJ ECC82 and 83's, but lost...

Greenboy Designs Official Club; Pt II

I made the grill support slats line up with the front edges of the sides and top (since I chose not to use an overall grill), and filled the crack so that it has a thicker, more solid look. Interior dimensions and port size remain unchanged. I've been designing and building speakers for close to...

Greenboy Designs Official Club; Pt II

So I took the plunge and built a Fearful 15/6, with slight modification. I used an Eminence Alphalite 6A-CBMR 6" Neo Sealed Back Midrange, therefore did not build a mid enclosure. I used the Eminence 2-way Xover at 800Hz. The mid has the same sensitivity as the 15, so they match well, and the...

    New Acoustic 360 Demo

Back in the 70's, I played through a 360, and fell in love with the dynamics and transient response (and projection) of the horn cabinet. Traditional vented boxes just don't match that. Unfortunately, it's a bear to pack on the road. My question for you all is: have any of you tried compact horn...

    Roland SIP-301

I've been using a Roland SIP-301 bass preamp for many years, and still love it. Lately it seems to be producing more noise than is tolerable at the board. Maybe it's better electronics at the board end, or maybe the 301 is getting tired? Doesn't seem to have changed at the stage side, but the...
