    Minnesota Bassist Club

Hi folks! Adam here, formerly of the Darkos (our drummer left for Milwaukee but we're still soldiering on). Living in Minneapolis for the time being. Nice to see a bunch of people here :) Also I just sold my 800RB to the bassist for the Alarmists, so that was kind of exciting. And a...

12AX7 bass preamp tubes Favorites and Lifespan

Holy almost 4 year-old thread! Anyways... Ok, so while perusing my favorite e-tailer of tubes (tubedepot.com), I noticed a new-comer to their product line: the JJ Hi-Performance 12AX7. Looks like it's just their regular 12AX7 with longer plates (yay!), a spiral-wound filament, and a...

    Epi > Gibson, New Tbird.

Oooo, very pretty! What's the feasibility of taking out the pickups and active wiring to drop in some more traditional t-bird pickups? :smug:

    Tube Amp Do's and Don'ts

Try all the different brands and models that you can afford. Afford, meaning don't get a NOS Telefunken 12AX7 ribbed plate "just because." Try some stuff out like Sovtek (super cheap, durable, and damn loud), JJ (cheap, a little more harmonically rich), Tung-Sol and all that stuff...

    Saving up for new head...

A used Ampeg SVT-3 Pro will run you around $400-$500 and would hit most of the bases you need it to. Heck, a TB'er (I forget his name) scored a brand new demo unit from GC for $150. Be sure to run it at 4 ohms with as many speakers as you can get. The Avatar B212N (1 @ 4 ohms or 2 @ 8/each)...

Ampeg SVT 3 Pro- Change the Tubes to Vintage?

I'm no expert, but I would swap my tubes out of any of the following started happening: - Faint, high-pitched noises without playing/having the amp on "mute" or after a note is played* - Loss of power over a short period of time (45 minutes to an hour or so) - Lower-than-usable output...

    500.00 ampeg svt

"One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong." edit: How'd I get beaten on this lol Also yeah, that's a REALLY good fail.

Ampeg SVT 3 Pro- Change the Tubes to Vintage?

Last night when I hooked up my 4-ohm Avatar B212N to my new-to-me SVT-3 Pro (which is a really raucus combo, by the way), it was going great and then the power started to die off and I started hearing a high-pitched "eeeeeee" sound after I hit a loud, short open "A" on my bass. So after...

I think I want an SVT 3 Pro...

I'm running my SVT-3 through an 8-ohm 250w 1x15" and the sound is enormous. I can drown-out both of my guitarists on their 4x12"s and give the drummer a run for his money. I've got a 4-ohm Avatar B212N on the way for next week and can't wait to plug it in. Paid $450 for it and don't regret a...

    Ampeg SVT3-Pro

I found that when I had the graphic EQ on and only boosted the level to "+10" it really made the amp sing. Great score, duder! I just spent $450 on a used one and feel like a chump!

    Official Ampeg Club!: Part II

Just bought a blue-and-red label SVT-3 Pro and have a 4-ohm Avatar B212N on its way. Can anyone tell me how excited I should be about getting the Avatar? I'd been using an 8-ohm Ashdown MAG 115, and I can't wait to get louder! Edit: I also have 3 NOS Sovtek 12AX7LPS's on the way :smug:

    SVT 2 pro power tubes

You'll want new KT88/6550 tubes, and Tube Depot has a bunch of them with pretty decent descriptions of each type: http://www.tubedepot.com/6550kt88.html I'm a Sovtek fan because 1.) I'm poor, 2.) they're very durable, and 3.) they seem to be louder, but that's a subjective thing. I'd go with...

    Are Edens any good?

Came for the thread title, stayed for the "I got a free D210XLT cuz my cousin's bassist is lazy/rich/stupid." As for your questions, David A Egeler answered most of them, but here you gon: 1.) No, the head/cabs don't need to be the same brand 2.) I'm not sure how to answer that question, but...

Ampeg SVT 3 Pro- Change the Tubes to Vintage?

Wee bump with a similar question. I just bought an Ampeg SVT-3 Pro the other day, and it sounded sort of choked so I'm replacing the tubes. I'm replacing the (really old) Sovtek 12AX7WB's with Sovtek 12AX7LPS's (pending the ebay win), and I've got a Philips 6189W (12AU7 type) that I dunno what...
