    18 inch speakers?

I don't think I get it. How is that a pun?

    18 inch speakers?

If that's a response to my post about gigging happily for years with my Carvin cab with one 18, since it was only 8 years ago that I quit the band, I'd remember if I'd thought it sounded bad or if anyone else had criticized my bass rig. Given that (like, I suspect, many old-school bassists) I...

    18 inch speakers?

I gigged steadily for seven years in my last band with a Carvin 1 x 18" cabinet with a slot for a port across the bottom. I'm glad I didn't know then that it sounded terrible, at least according to this thread.

    Usually not into modern dance....

From this Wikipedia page: The quote's origin is unknown. It is most commonly misattributed to musicians Laurie Anderson[3] and Elvis Costello.[4] Others, including Costello himself, credit the remark to comedian Martin Mull, although a variation ("talking about music is like singing about...

Help me avoid a potential scam

Maybe not a good idea to suggest walking into a bank with a gun-sized instrument case.

Double Bass The Truth About John Coltrane

I absolutely adored Clapton's soloing with Cream. Seeing them live in 1968 was revelatory. Bought the Derek and the Dominos album shortly after release, when I learned it was Clapton's post-Blind Faith band. To say it was a disappointment is an understatement. Since then, the only examples...

Jeff Beck, Seal and Pino Palladino on “Manic Depression” — Why Didn’t I Know This Existed?

You're referring to the foreground overdub, I guess. There's another guitar track low in the mix.

RANT: going ampless -> why digital? why IR?

Smoothness? As in smooth jazz? Given that ring modulators are about as in-your-face as effects get, some might consider that a feature, not a bug.

Receiving a Bass heavier than advertised

Those nonsensical decimal points are crazy-making. "9.lbs" is meaningless. "9.4 oz" represents a total weight of under 1 pound. 9.4 pounds (which I'll assume is how the seller listed the weight, pending your going back and checking the original ad) is 9 pounds and 6.4 ounces.

    Bass for acoustic rock?

I'd get an electric upright bass. I used a 34"-scale Dean EUB for years with a standards jazz quartet. Looking back, I'm a little sorry I didn't go for one with a standard 41" scale, but the Dean was fine. Here's an EUB that was recently listed on Reverb. Looks like a homemade one, but it...

    Is Paul right?

Same here. I often go to a local outdoor stage, look around carefully to make sure there's no one within sight or earshot, and then play my set.

All Things Must Beat. Share Anything Beatles!!

What was it with 1960s manufacturers of solid-state guitar amps and their quest for ever-shriller treble? Trying to keep the guitars audible over screaming preteen girls? And it wasn't just Vox. Acoustic Control included high-frequency horns in some of their cabinets. And my behemoth Gibson...

Why would one hole cost that much?

You may be right. But: Setting aside the inevitable subtle differences in verbal nuance and body language between cultures, even those that ostensibly share a language, the UK countries with a history of subjugation have a long tradition of maintaining a bland exterior in conversations with...
