Try a Fender Jazz Aerodyne, just picked one up for myself about 6 months ago. Not my main bass, but still plays great and you can get that nice warm, earthy tone. As far as price, should be under a grand.

I have a 1990 Ibanez Road bass in black that has always had great action. Built for speed. Just put in Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups, and the sound is incredible. Nice and punchy for cutting through all the noise when playing live. This is my new favorite bass.

I like it, but don't care for the pickguard. I also like the idea of moving that one edge about half of an inch.
