Try a Fender Jazz Aerodyne, just picked one up for myself about 6 months ago. Not my main bass, but still plays great and you can get that nice warm, earthy tone. As far as price, should be under a grand.

Just put in Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups, and the sound is incredible. Nice and punchy for cutting through all the noise when playing live. This is my new favorite bass.
