Lifted off a couple old posts of mine:
Not that I reject the premise of the thread (I should give it more thought), but I prefer to betray its letter and throw in some random mentions rather than one name.

Peter Gabriel has my respect, even if I'm no huge fan of either Genesis or his solo work.
I want Phil Lynott in this thread, don't care where he "ranks".
Van Morrison is a giant.

Steve Marriott, Chris Cornell, Don Henley and Brad Delp. I've seen a live clip of the latter from I think 1979 and he was incredibly solid - dead on pitch, I was very impressed. Huge loss.

Speaking of honorable mentions, some great sets of lungs from '60 and '70 Britain:
Long John Baldry;
Chris Farlowe;
Paul Williams of Tempest's first album;
Terry Reid;
Roger Chapman.
Oh, yes, David Byron!
Here's a couple Eighties artists with great pipes and not especially wide recognition I was pleased to become aware of albeit only recently, Sam Brown and Lisa Dalbello:
Sam Brown

and Lisa Dalbello

On the same vein,
Marcy Levy, one of Eric Clapton’s best back up singers. I really liked her work on The Core and others...
^ big yes for Marcy Levy
+2 about Levy. Here is her (by then k.a. Marcella Detroit) solo hit:

Finally (for now), Steve Winwood and Christine McVie (née Perfect, and to me she was already, back when she used her maiden name).
Oh, and Lou Gramm, anyone?
