I agree, you need a sub. You can talk with the whole band and say everyone is missing out on gigs, and either the guitarist agrees to getting a sub or what are the other options?? Loose more gigs, replace the drummer? Neither of these seems the right choice. Especially if a sub could just slip...

I think there is an element of his bass & EQ'ing. Also, apart from compression, there is definitely some distortion used as well that helps with his tapping & harmonics. That Tommy the Cat vid was awesome
