Which pedal has stayed on your board the longest?

Weirdly, my Hardwire SC-2 Valve Distortion. I used it as a guitar overdrive originally, and when I moved to bass I brought it along. I have it set at very low gain and leave it on. It does a killer job fattening up my tone, and on nights where I'm having weird tone issues with the room, I often...

Which Famous Bassists change bass brands as Frequently as us TBers?

John Stirratt has used a bunch of different brands in his Wilco tenure. He's using a custom Schroeder now.

Squier to Fender Mexican worth it?

As with any instrument, the price often doesn't matter- what matters is that it's right for you. Personally, the best feeling guitar I have ever played is my lead guitarist's MIM Strat, which he got for $300. With instruments I would always play before I bought, and if a specific bass just feels...

    PF-800

I just folded on my PF500. I was tired of my head not working. This seems like it will do the trick for PF fans, but I will not be trusting it for a long time. Coming from a full time tour situation, the weaksauce PF500 was too risky from day one, and when mine finally gave out, I was in a real...

Do You Play a Fender Because It's Expected?

No. I play a Fender because they cannot be killed. Durability is a BIG deal:) My Fender is a workhorse, which is the primary thing I ask for from my basses.

    Ampeg PF500/350, part 4

Here's my PF500 with it's new best friend! Still cuts out, though...

    NRD: Ampeg Cabinet Overhaul (Pics+Tutorial!)

So as an overseas cabinet, mine is inherently inferior, correct? :D Also, D's not my favorite either.

    NRD: Ampeg Cabinet Overhaul (Pics+Tutorial!)

Are you sure? The back says manufactured in Vietnam, 2006. I had indeed thought that they switched over in March of 07 though.

What would you do? (Ethical question)

I don't believe in karma with most things, but something tells me that if you keep it, BOTH of the PF500's will eventually explode. In the middle of a gig. And you won't have a backup. Also you'll get AIDS. At the very very least, I'd put money that both of them have that butt-stupid cutting...

    NRD: Ampeg Cabinet Overhaul (Pics+Tutorial!)

I had seriously considered it, but I think I'm going to hold off, at least for now- my amp is an Ampeg PF500, and I like how the current grill cloth ties the amp in to the cab. I'm pretty afraid that if I do a wheat colored cloth or something similar, my head, or any head I use in the future...

    NRD: Ampeg Cabinet Overhaul (Pics+Tutorial!)

New rigs have their reasons behind them- it's not always that your old rig doesn't do you right. Sometimes, there's just MORE out there, and the GAS in you won't ease up, and it's time for you to get a new rig. I replaced my head first, swapping an Ampeg B2RE for one of the new PF500s. And...

Bring your own mic to gigs?

I bring everything but a snake to gigs. It's done me well over the years.

Essentials for a gigging bassist's pedal board?

I'm also in a band that plays originals mostly- I use a lot of effects, but they're pretty subtle. Other than my wah, which I use just a couple of times a set if I'm not using it to make noise, everything is pretty low-key. Even my distortion is set incredibly mild. That said, a couple of...

    Ampeg PF500/350, part 4

Same story, but with a 610HLF. Did you ever try the gain first fix? I haven't had a chance to yet.

    Ampeg PF500/350, part 4

So, I'm a bad thread-digger: my PF500 is a cutter. Never noticed it with my 8-ohm 115, but I switched to a 4-ohm cab, and sure enough, at high volumes it does cut out. Now, admittedly, the volumes at which it does this are pretty much what I'd consider more than I'd need (gain at noon...
