Can sound engineers thrash bass players/bands? Here we go...

My venue has two rooms. A 175 seat and an 850 seat. My only issue is with the band having. Mixer on stage. Now I don't want to blend wet and dry signals for a band that I havent rehearsed with, but I do want to have control/a seperate line for backing tracks.

Will someone explain headroom to me?

I should have specified in my post that I am assuming that most of us by as much Cab as we need for the gig. Which is why it is often good to have a power amp capable of handling more power than what the speaker is rated for. Not to be able to send the cab more power then it can take but to send...

Will someone explain headroom to me?

In my opinion when looking at all of these issues the idea of headroom applies to both the amp and the cab separately and together. The amp has an upper limit to how much power it can put out, and the speaker has a limit to how much power it can receive and convert into sound. So imagine that...

Double Bass recording in a studio

Not only is a pickup helpful if the mic track doesn't work out, but if the bass isn't isolated and all the musicians are in the room together it can save you. For instance I was mixing a tune on which a much more talented player then myself was playing. At the end of the tune the bassist played...

    full Volume on power Amp?

my two cents. if your pre has variable input and output then start with the amp dimed and use the pre's output to get to a reasonable level. if the amp itself is noisy then you can back off some, but i would use pre all the way off and amp all the way up as my starting point and then move knobs...

How many of you put bass before everything else?

When I was younger I played trombone and not bass. I was dedicated to it. Then I went to school for the horn and I began to have doubts. I took a break and in that time picked up bass for fun. Also in that time I picked up a new career in one of my other passions. Cooking. I was fairly...

    Motown era: compression?

My understanding is that part of the motown sound was distortion from how hard they were hiting the tape. I have read that in order to eliminate signal to noise ratio motown engineers would try to hit the tape as hard as they could with signal and ended up "clipping" which on tape, as has been...

    Metronome for jazz recording?

I have been told by someone who worked with Peters Erskine that he prefers working with a click. I think the trick is to be able to place your beat were you want it in relation to the kick. In other words, do the whole metronome on 2 and 4 thing. It works really well.

Why so many fat bass players?

Ok so its not a generalization to say being overweight increases risks for several conditions. But clearly that was not your original comment. Since you imagine all us overweight bass players are diabetic with health problems and medical issues let me assure you that while I am 5'11" and weigh...

Double Bass Higher Ground key question

If you're going back and forth between the two versions (Stevie's and RHCP) be aware that Stevie's starts in Eb minor as his band used to tune down a half step. This makes it a lot easier on many vocalists but not on bass players unless you happen to tune down a half step.

    Double Bass Schroetter Bass- Junk?

My college owns a Schroetter. It just came back from the shop to have a long crack in the middle of the top bellow the bridge repaired. This bass has a spruce top with a fairly nice grain to it. I think the back and sides are ply however. I have only been playing upright about a year (electric...

Songs people have to stop covering

I think its expected that cover bands play songs people recognize, because people do enjoy hearing stuff they know. It seems almost counter intuitive to me, but people actually don't like being surprised. For dancing I guess this makes sense. Its easier to dance to songs when you know what...

    Forgot my bass!!!

After practice I usually pull my car up to the side of the building where the outdoor elevator is. I unload my upright bass, park the car and walk back to the elevator which I don't take except when I have the bass with me. About a month ago I unloaded the bass by the outdoor elevator, parked...
