Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense. I think he may have been talking about tension on the top of the bass but I didn’t ask for clarification. It didn’t sound choked off at all with Spiro Weichs on the bottom and Olivs on top.

I recommend trying Efrano G & D guts from Lemur. They are great bang for the buck. I've had them on a German ply (mixed with Evah Slap E & A) and they have held up very well. Just oil the strings and clip the hairs as they appear. The Efranos have more tension than the Superior bass works...

The best combo I have found SO FAR for the type of playing you're doing is plain guts on G & D and EP Slaps on A & E. The guts are PERFECT. The EP slaps took a while to mellow out but they are the closest in tension to the guts. Two downsides to this combo on MY bass is the guts are louder...
