OMG . . . Bobby Caldwell (RIP) has been one of my fav's for decades. And absolutely, he was a fantastic multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger, producer, and more IMO.

As bass players we all all angst over these minor nuances, though interestingly our audiences probably don't sense differences. INO rolling with with whatever feels and sounds best will ultimately satisfy all involved - the audience and yourself :)

HPF only. Have built-in compressor and chorus on amp, though rarely use them.

GK MB series are, IMHO, incredibly versatile in terms of tone range. Definitely capable of modern/clean if that’s what you’re after. They’re also small and light enough to use with external cabs, kind of like having a combo that’s small and light enough to use as a head.

Intrigued by @bassfran's (OP) mention of "I also run a Broughton HPF and a Zerofive Lowrider as always-on"... I'm a fan of HPF's, although the Zerofive Lowrider was entirely new to me, so I had to look into it. Very interesting device, looks like there's a nice TB thread with a lot of details...

Had soloist experiences back in the day when I gigged regularly with an Acoustic 371, similar folded horn cab.

I've had more of a challenge in small rooms because low freq wave forms do not fully form and are truncated, plus phase cancellations etc etc such that a good focused sound is hard to achieve. I'd love to hear solutions if my impressions are misguided! E.g., someone mention studio monitors, so...

What kind/size of venue and style of music? FOH support or just project from stage? I have no experience with this model but have seen a lot of positive comments here on TB….and one can’t argue the Ampeg sound is not loved by scores of players!!

Maybe I'm missing something, there was a reference to "same room" so I wasn't sure if that referred to a rehearsal space or live audience room. If it is indeed a rehearsal space, that does seem like a lot cab/air movement!

Lots of advanced (well respected) expertise weighing in on this one...e.g., @Wasnex, @agedhorse, et. al... undoubtedly enlightening and fun to read/learn from them.... and FWIW the comments from others on the use of an HPF in this situation are, in my humble view, very well placed!

Louis Johnson is deserving to be #1 on anyone’s list…IMO :)
