If Basses were cars what would yours be?

My Alvarez would probably be something like a Celica GT or a Twin Turbo Supra. Lightweight, imported, fun to drive.

    Ultimate Bass?

My early 90's Alvarez Villain; 24 frets, active pickups. Not that expensive but pretty rare. Reasonably wide tonal range and I've never played another bass more comfortable.

    Help dealing with bandmate's relatives.

Why don't you just tell him to mind his business? You can do it in a pleasant way.

    Do you have a 'Wife?'

It's a Korean-made Alvarez EB800. Actually they both are; my main instrument is the one on the right. basses | Flickr - Photo Sharing! I've had it for probably 16 years. It's an early '90's model. I traded a Washburn and a couple of hundred bucks for it. I didn't realize it had active...

Why is there so much hate against using picks?

I think that, when you start playing guitar and then switch to bass, the perception is that you (a) are just a guitar player "filling in" on bass and that (b) you can't play with your fingers so you play with a pick. But that's just the perception. Myself, I played the guitar for probably...

    2 fingers or 3

I can't see a good reason to say, "I'll never use three fingers." Personally, I usually use two, and frequently a thumb, and sometimes the ring finger, and occasionally the pinky, as well. But I can also play with a pick almost as well. Your ring finger is handy to use in a tapping...

Does anyone here only play passive basses?

When I roll back the tone knob on the bridge pickup of my Alvarez about 1/4, I get my favorite sound in the world. It's clear, deep, and defined. But sometimes, when I'm not looking for that, especially in a studio setting, and I want something that's just more...round?...I put it down and...

A different way to look at expensive gear

I guess it depends on where you are. When I play a gig in Worcester, about an hour outside of Boston and far away from Berklee, nobody knows what kind of gear you're playing. People generally have a good time if you sound good and will dance if you can get them to. When I play a gig in...

how many hours do you practice?

Very, very rarely. Most of the time, I only pick up the bass when I'm specifically working on something, which is mostly at work these days. I play more guitar at home than I do bass, and even at that, it's probably an hour a week or less.
