I've always been partial to trying to sneak my lines in just behind the beat. Gives things a sticky groove, imo.

Silly guitarists. They usually tune down entire guitar a half-step for the vocalist. I'd just follow suit and do the same with bass. No harm. My guitarist tunes his low E to D. I just stay in E. Makes for some cool bass lines.

My guitarist stays in drop D while I stay in E. Makes for interesting bass lines. Very colorful.

yes ...you've given people an opportunity to exercise their egos with what they know....and that's fine, theory is good to know but there are people out there who will intentionally try to intimidate you with their breadth of knowledge...when in reality, you know just as much as them...
