As an owner of an MJ-5, specifically the one posted by Greg from Rocket Music, I can confirm that it also has noisy electronics. Unfortunately, this is consistent with every other US G&L I've owned (an SB-2 and two JB's).

I've had the SR4000 for almost a year now, and I'd say it's definitely worth the $1500 price tag. It's a good bass, but it's a different beast than the Fender Jazz. The SR4000 is a bit more aggressive and lacks the low end of the Fender.

You can typically learn more with a good teacher in a shorter amount of time than you can on your own. Since you have only a finite amount of time in your life, I see that as a big downside, especially if a good teacher can save you years of self-directed study time.
