Finally an EMG active jazz pickup with an Alnico magnet instead of ceramic. Since they are pretty new I probably won't find a used set, so I want to get some feedback about them.

Recently bought a used ESP Vintage 4 with X model p/ Js . Sounds great but without removing , how do you determine ceramic or alnico?
I have a couple G&L JB basses that I upgraded with EMGs. I put JAX pickups in one of them a year ago and JVX pickups in the other. The install is easy, though it took a little bit of work to get the battery to fit.
As for the sound, the JAX and JVX are very similar with the JAX sounding a bit more mid-scooped. As such, I prefer the JVX. They have a mid characteristic similar to my stock Fender MIA jazz, but with extended lows and clearer highs. Ed Friedland has a good video covering the JVX pickups here:

I looked at the JVXs on eBay, it seems all pictured have pole pieces except one. I suspect that one pictured is a misrepresentation. (I must have a blade magnet for my narrow spaced 6 string)
Both have alnico magnets. You describe the JVX as less scooped. Generally speaking, 'punch', or 'beefiness' in a single coil tends to refer to a strong lower midrange, though if it's too strong it will sound like a double coil (I guess.)

That is precisely the sound I want! Like an MIA Jazz with extended lows & clearer highs.
(I want my basswood Squier to sound closer to my Marcus Miller bass)

Not "user friendly" for androids, though. They don't answer email inquiries either.
That's quite unusual IMHO. EMG's CS is usually spot-on. Might want to try calling.
I have enjoyed the original model p / j set on 2 previous basses and am digging my latest with the p / j x and BTC system . I am familiar with EMG's site but was curious if there is an easy way to determine if mine are alnico , ceramic or hybrid . The seller only knew they were the X version (silver lettering ).
These sound diff than my original models but I honestly can't say what type of magnet. I could prob tell a diff in head to head X model comparison and I'm sure they are labeled on the bottom , just don 't want to uninstall them; set up is perfect.

The a in JAX means Alnico. JX is ceramic. JCS is cleramic and steel, JVS are Alnico pole style, the others are blades.
On eBay the photos look identical, but the EMGX of the JX appears silver, the EMGX of the JAX appears gold. But photos can be deceiving.
Jsmith can confirm if his letters are gold.

Thanks for the info guys . Looks like all 3 sets are ceramic. I guess my passives will provide my alnico fix for now . I would like to try an alnico EMG for curiosity.
