I have a Palmer pocket bass amp, that does the job you are asking about. In addition it can serve as a DI and a pre amp for your pedalboard. Not to expensive, especially on the used market. Simple, but versatile.

That looks familiar, except that the noe I have borrowed only has noe blue trim pot. The preamp is a Bartollini marked MTD-G, buffered tone shaper. It’s also worth mentioning the logo on the headstock, saying “licensed by Michael Tobias Design”. No serial number, which I understand is common...

Could it be that the tight fit of the nut slot keeps the string from making full contact with the zero- fret that this bass has? Thus creating a buzz/ rattle.

I recently bought a Palmer pocket amp https://www.thomann.de/gb/palmer_pocket_amp_bass.htm simple piece of gear that I believe checks most of your boxes (excluding USB connectivity). Have not used it much yet, but seems ok so far, given it's relatively low price. :cool:
