I can't say enough good about my Kemper Power Head. Not cheap, but if you have the scratch it is a decent value with great support. It is an even better value for someone like myself who doubles on guitar.

As a rule: Thin but not too thin. 1.5 nut. Rosewood or Ebony. 7.25 radius is preferred (esp. if the nut is wider than 1.5). But, rules have been broken. All the specs put together determine comfort and 'speed'.

Outside, yes. Inside, no. Issue = hat head, so I avoid wearing outside if I know I will be inside on stage later.
