    All-tube amp advantages?

You mentioned you have a class D for a back up. I have a Carvin BX1500 that I paired with an Ampeg PF50 as a preamp. Sweet! Tube sound with SS power. So, if you already have the class D, might be less expensive to look at the PF50. And it only weighs 20 pounds.

What one specific thing do you feel helped elevate your playing

For me, I feel that this book on Latin Bass has helped me cross through one of the many roadblocks we encounter as bass players. This book helped me in my sightreading, string muting, off beat accents, creating my own funk bass lines, really just getting my groove on - the skills I am...

Best compliment you got after a gig......

"You sound like a studio musician. May I have a list of all your recordings?" I'm in a cover band so there are no recordings :/

    Trying out new amps

I was watching the NHL winter classic yesterday, and between periods there was a St. Louis Blues Band (pun intended) where the bass player had an Ampeg rig that looked like the PF50T on either a 115 or a 210...in Busch Stadium in front of thousands...mic'd of course.

    5 string set up

Hi y'all, I have a Carvin PB5, lovely bass, great action, punchy pickups.... Tuning at the 12th fret by adjusting the bridge saddles. G D A E strings good. But, the low B string... its still sharp at the 12th fret after I've adjusted the saddle all the way back..Help!

Flea plays the National Anthem at Kobe Bryant's last game

Esperanza Spaulding would have been a MUCH better choice to present the National Anthem on bass.

    So, my neighbor is angry...

I'm 54 and in a band with 5 others...the female singer is 38 and the rest of us north of 50. We had one neighbor call the cops on us multiple times. The rest of the neighbors liked us. Anyway, hilarity ensued when the cop, who couldn't have been more than 27 y.o, shows up to quite us down. Total...

Best used or new Bass Head for under $800

I would check out Carvin. I have two, BX1500 and BX700. I am contantly amazed how much less expensive Carvin bass amps are compared to other makes. Oh, they also sound great!

    Career Changer

Yes! Being ready to grab an opportunity is key. Thanks to both above responses! Is there noone else in TB land who can point to an event the changed their career? Maybe it's mostly steady dedicated work that leads to success? But, even the most talented player needs to be in the right place at...

    Career Changer

I am curious about musicians in general, but bass players in particular, who have experienced that one main event that made all the difference between a ho hum career, and one that dramatically improved your career for the better. That one gig where someone in the audience heard you and...

How should I string my Fender Jazz?

I play in a classic rock cover band that also does some straight electric blues. My main bass is a Carvin PB 5 PJ which has round super brights. It cuts through the mix great, punchy slap bass (on the one song I play slap). I love the versitility so it will remain my main ax. I have a Fender P...

Opinionated question. Do you ever take the time to learn a song 100%?

Sometimes yes. Mostly, no. If the song has a "signature" bass line that makes the song indentifiable because of it, then yes. But, more times then not, the bass player on the original recording was simply ad libbing the groove, then that is what I do.

How do bars generally calculate band pay?

I think that depends on what makes a type of music superior to others....but if you say that a music that is more harmonically deep is superior, then I think jazz is superior. I am not saying a person cannot become extremely skilled playing a guitar or rock 'n roll music. And I totally...

How do bars generally calculate band pay?

I want to point out the following is my opinion based on observation, experience, and having read A LOT of musician biographies over the years. Many of the bios are of jazz musicians struggling to make in years past, Mingus, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington. Also, rock 'n roll acts like the Beatles...

    Carvin Rig advice

I have a BX1500 and a BX700 that I interchange depending on the gig. I have two Acme Low B 2 - 4 ohms cabs. I stack 'em vertically for the big gigs and use one for the smaller ones - couldn't be happier.
