Things we didn't know or do in the 60's and 70's

In 1970 I got a used J-bass with really fat strings on it and plenty of bow in the neck. I took it to a guitar shop to get it adjusted......it took them two weeks. When I got it back the neck was still not right. Discovered I could adjust a truss rod myself. Still have that unit. It is a...

Quirky Things You Do As A Bassist

I am always on the right side of the stage. Being left handed this makes sense. But it also lets me keep track of the rest of the folks on stage. Kind of like the bass is the boss, as God intended.........the natural order of things.....etc

Things we didn't know or do in the 60's and 70's

I still have a Shure 4 input microphone mixer.....and a Unidyne mic....and some other old stuff. I like putting old speakers in newer amps/cabinets. By old speaker I am referring to JBL D-140s and Altec Lansing 421's, not those crappy things that came in amps back in the day.

How do you improve your stage presence?

Stand up! Pay attention to the band. Check out the audience for pretty girls. Get in your zone and groove. Your stage presence will be there like zen on a motorcycle......does that even make sense?

How many amps do you guys own?

3 combo's and one head. Several cabinets.....I like trying different speakers......need more speakers....10's, 12's, 15's, and an 8 inch for one little combo, I think.....and maybe a newer head.......sorta GAS.

Please post your most trivial first world problem here

I got kicked out of a bar because I wouldn't show the bar tender my ID.......I am 72 pushing 73. And I saw a juvenile porcupine in my driveway last night. Cute little creature.

    Thoughts on the bass "over-player"

I used to get very frustrated because I could not play the bass lines as I thought they should be played. Then I realized that I was making things way more complicated than they needed to be. Happiness is a bass line that fits the song as it is being played.

Play for free, huh? Not cool!

your songs are strong enough to stand on their own without needing a full band behind them, and you’re comfortable putting yourself out there without having a band as a safety net, I say go for it. The troubadour tradition is still alive and well. The only catch is you have to be really good...

Play for free, huh? Not cool!

We would play for free, or tips and beer/food. We looked at it as practicing in public. We never practiced in private.....for some reason the guitar guy didn't want to. Practicing in public let's you know how good you actually are: If people don't leave you might be getting better...

If you had $2,000 to buy a (used) bass - what would you get? (4 strings, passive)

A left handed Les Paul bass if there is such a thing. Tried talking to the Gibson custom shop once about such a thing.......never heard back from them.

Help with identifying this Fender Jazz Bass?

Yeah, a wild and crazy kind of guy........ Under neath the pick guard I found 666 routed into the body. This was done at the factory by the devil herself as near as I can tell. Yup, it is the devil bass...........

Help with identifying this Fender Jazz Bass?

the third reason- I dig the way they sound. I have five lefty Jazz basses, and four Precisions. I think you'd like my collection. The third reason is the best reason. Yeah I would like your collection. I have an old Jazz bass and a newer P bass. The are both fun. I have had the J bass...

Help with identifying this Fender Jazz Bass?

Yeah, I should do that. The pick guard has been off but that event took place years ago, many many years ago. Thanks!

Help with identifying this Fender Jazz Bass?

So what year is your lefty jazz (LJ)? I have a 68 but it doesn't have the brass grounding strap that your bass seems to have. It has always been noisy.....I use the volume and tone controls mostly to minimize the noise. Didn't know there was supposed to be a grounding strap.

Help with identifying this Fender Jazz Bass?

If the controls are scratchy you could spray a little contact cleaner on them. This has worked most of the time for me. When it doesn't work it is time for new variable resistors. These can be purchased at any good music store. If no one has mentioned this yet.
