Whats the biggest mistake you made in your bass "career"

My biggest mistake? Definitely getting married. Not even kidding. Didn’t play at all for 12 years. Then I went to a pawn shop and bought a bass, then went to the courthouse and bought a divorce. Lol. The next ten years was everything I had missed: open mics, bar bands, groupies and then a...

Do you use a tablet for reading music/lyrics?

I use an iPad with the OnSong app for lyrics and set lists. I'll also flip over to the Master Fader app to control the Mackie DL1608 mixer when needed. And break music streams off the iPad as well. I use a Proel mini music stand mounted on the mic stand to hold it. I'm quite happy with the setup.

Intonation. How is it possible that over time, while playing, my tuning goes sharp rather than flat?

I had this same problem. It was the tu-2 tuner. Chucked it and got the polytune and stayed right on the money from then on.

    tendonitis. didn't see it coming

I've got the tendinitis in my right elbow and work-related carpal in the wrist. Had both for years however, I play with the bass slung low and my elbow and wrist completely straight and playing is one of the few things that doesn't cause any pain. So that's good. But good luck buddy. It's do-able.

What were people playing in the 80's?

Wow, 80's. I had just traded in my Fender Bullet bass for a new Ric 4003. I paired it with a Sunn Beta Bass 100 watt head on a B215 cab. That rig served me well. Lotta good memories. I did a lot of shows direct with no DI. I made a TRS to XLR cable and ran it out of the Ric-o-sound jack...

    I got a PA

I ran a Yamaha emx 660 for a few years because it sounded so good and was compact. I upgraded a couple years ago to a mackie dl1608 into qsc ksubs and k12's foh and k8's as monitors. Expensive but made life so much easier! I do kind of miss the simplicity of the Yamaha though.

What is the biggest POS bass you have played?

A 80's Global EBO copy. Horrible sound, terrible electronics and hardware. But it looked good and it's better to look good than play good. Got rid of that in a hurry. Also a 90's Jazz 5 Deluxe was just bland sounding. Not at all impressed. The B string was pretty much just a waste of real estate.

What stopped you from becoming big and famous?

Girls. Girls every time have derailed the path I was on. Oh, and also going deaf may be a factor. But I ain't done yet! Now testing the marketability of a deaf bass player.

Your First Concerts & Other Influences

My first concert was Triumph in the very early 80's. I was 13 or 14 and I don't remember much except how embarrassed I was when mom dropped my buddy and I off in the station wagon. Couple years later I was lucky enough to score tickets from the radio station for The Who in the Houston...

The name of your band is...?

Doing covers for the tourist crowds. We like to hang out in bars and we're kinda nutty so we settled on the Bar Nutz Funest band I've been in.

Stolen lunch in the work place

When I worked in a jail, there was one officer who would go to each floor and take one or two bites out of each of other jailers' lunch while they were out of the office. Nothin like sittin down to lunch and finding only some of your lunch left! I hated that place.

    Worst gig you ever had.

I had been playin with this band about a year and the guitarist was always whining sayin he wished we had a house band gig. I get us a weekly gig at a rather nice club, the pay is well above average, and the owner is young business-savvy guy. Dream gig! 2 shows in, hosting an open mic night...

Cover band pay: how much are you making?

Where I live, it is a varied market. The general rule is no less than $100/man for this 3 piece variety band. There are a couple of venues that have treated us well through the years and provide a house p.a. And we play for the door or a percentage of sales. That usually comes out the same...

Post your old/stupid band pics!! (the more embarrassing the better) Part 2!

1985. Spring Break Party. I sure miss that Ric. I'm not sure about the no-shoes thing.

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

My Geddy Lee & an Alien headless California Series Jazz Jazz Special The Geddy lee was my main bass for a few years until I found the Special. Same neck but rosewood. Then a month later I found he California Series and that was a huge improvement over both. That Alien was the first bass I...
