I'm asking because I don't understand anything about electronics ;) I figured that if the peak of unplugging can damage the speakers, it might also put too much stress on the components of an effects pedal.

I always turn off all my pedals (except the comp which doesn't shift the pitch) when I tune between songs anyway. Also, my bass is active so signal loss is not an issue.

Can plugging in and unplugging a cable into a guitar hurt effects pedals (especially when they are turned on)? I'm asking because I have put my tuner at the end of the effects chain the other day and I always have my compressor on. Should I change back?

Yeah the vast majority of people say that in their experience they are dead silent as they should be according to the design. I highly doubt that all those people have only ever played in 'quiet' places.

When you install the EMG J-Set, does the battery get drained whenever you plug in a cable or all the time or how does that work?

Haha, I happen to think that he sounds best with Strats and Teles so I don't really want to put him off it. I've looked around for different pickups a little and it seems to me that the EMG J-Set seems to have that growly presence similar to a Stingray. Maybe I should give that a go.
