    RIP Bob Birch

Likewise, Chris. I remember the day Bob came into The Bass Centre and announced he had gotten the gig with Elton. He was super excited, as one can imagine. First call: Ernie Ball to get some basses for the tour? Sure seemed like a nice guy who had paid some dues and was getting a break. So sad...

    MXR 288 octave pedal

MXR support indicated that the tracking is related to harmonics. Muting kills the harmonics so that makes sense.

    MXR 288 octave pedal

I have an OC2 as well. I was hoping the MXR would be better since they designed it for bass and typically I have had good luck with their stuff. I really like the tone controls, but the tracking issues may be the deal-breaker. Mike

    MXR 288 octave pedal

I noticed some trouble in that weak spot between frets 5 and 9 on the G as well.

    MXR 288 octave pedal

I have a new SR Classic. I have the treble slightly less than full. I appreciate all the comments - it is an interesting mix! I emailed Dunlop support to see if I have a faulty pedal and they said the pedal has to wade through the harmonics to find the fundamental; that is the tracking issue. I...

    MXR 288 octave pedal

Just got my new pedal. The tracking with my Sting Ray is questionable. Staccato notes are garbled while it figures out what to do. Anyone else have experience with this pedal? I love the girth and growl tones, but it seems limited if everything must be a long, smooth tone. I really expected...

    Who's your FAVORITE Bass player?

Leland Sklar. James Taylor, Billy Cobham, and the first Barefoot Servants CD. Are you kidding me? What can't this guy play? I also have a special place for Alain Caron. He made Abe Laboriel cry one evening at The Bass Centre.

    U-Bass

I have the fretless model; it is a year old. The tone is fantastic and the bass plays real nice. My musician buddies always comment on the tone and how surprisingly good it sounds. I am not an upright player so this gives me something like that when needed. I usually go straight into the house...

Who is your favorite under appriciated bassist?

Others mentioned Mars Cowling - great call! He is smokin' on "Go For What You Know". A few more come to mind: Jerry Peek (Steve Morse Band), Boz Burrell (Bad Co.), Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire)

Purpose of Having an Amp When There's a PA

As others have said, I think this really depends on the size of the room. At some point, if the bass is in the PA, we lose all control over the tone and level. If you have an amp, at least you have a chance of hearing "your" tone at a reasonable volume. Personally, that can be inspiring. If the...

The Radial Big Shot looks interesting, too. Thanks for that suggestion!
