    Music or Personal-space ??

I often hang with my bandmates/their families and do non-band stuff, but definitely not organized outings where families are expected to join.

ProCo Rat for Bass? Yes or No.

If you never turn it off you can kind of tailor the amp's eq to suit it, but pretty much what everyone else said. It lops off a lot of low end. I would go for a bass-specific version with a clean signal blend.

Ever walk away from a stressful job?

I did it last spring. Got tired of working 11 hour days and never getting above water. Plus I was remote, which I was tired of. My current job has its moments, particularly since I have to manage people (it's in my job title), but the owners also get the importance of work/life balance, and...

    Pedal Board Suggestions

It sounds like your needs are pretty simple sounds-wise. I’d start with picking up a few pedals and letting that dictate what size board you need. I play a different genre of music, but tonally my needs are pretty similar. My chain is Darkglass Vintage Microtubes>Pigtronix Class A Boost...

How Often Do Your Guitarists Tune?

As a guitar and bass player I tune pretty frequently. Usually I can do it discretely so it doesn’t slow things down. I’ll even tweak a string mid-song (by ear) if I really need to. I know what some of you are saying about instruments and setup, but some are just inherently tricky. Even with...

    Bike helmets

Just go to a shop and try a few on. From a protection standpoint they are all more or less equal. Pick whatever’s comfortable that you like (or don’t completely hate) the look of. A helmet will only be worthwhile if you wear it.

You never know about an audition

^Awesome. I have my first show with the new band a week from Friday. They are not going to keep me that busy though.

    How many use a pick?

Combination. Some songs call for a pick sound, so I use one for those. I’m not sure why there is so much stigma about using a pick. It’s a way to get a certain sound. Sure, playing with a pick puts certain limits on what you can do, but limits aren’t a bad thing.

Going into battle vs. distorted guitars

As someone who is also a guitar player my guess is they need to chill with the gain. Heaviness is in the playing, not necessarily in a super distorted sound. See Black Sabbath, AC/DC, etc... A guitar sound that leaves space for others is a beautiful thing.

    New Wave / Punk forebears...

Totally agree, but this thread has gotten pretty wide ranging.

Do you play in two bands?

I just joined a third band (two on guitar, one on bass) All are original material, so using a sub isn’t an option. First come first served is my policy. I do the booking for one band, so that work gets spread around. Booker offers date. Band e-mail or group text goes out. Everyone responds...

Board suggestions. Do I need an octave or other mod pedal?

Doesn’t sound like there is a particular need for that stuff, so don’t buy it.

    New Wave / Punk forebears...

Johnny Marr gets a lot of love and rightfully so, but the Smiths would have been a very different band without Andy Rourke. Whoever wrote those lines he did a really good job playing them. I love Gary “Mani” Moufield’s playing on the 1989 Stone Roses debut. Such great simple hooks. I can only...

You never know about an audition

After a pretty long wait and much discussion I was offered a spot in this band yesterday and I accepted. The band I sing and play guitar in is putting out a new recording on Tuesday and playing a release show on the 23rd. The new band is playing on the 31st and can’t start rehearsing again...

    Hilarious Craigslist Ad

LOL. Those are my faves when I play guitar. Seems worth it, but I’d send it off for carbon dating before paying a “vintage” price.
