    Double Bass bow sizes

Should be about an inch to inch and a half shorter. I'll try to remember to measure one tomorrow to get an accurate reading.

    Double Bass 4/4 Questions

The 4/4 will certainly be harder to play, but eventually you'd adjust to it. I'd say the biggest factor in judging if you can play a 4/4 is hand size and how flexible your extensions are (stretch between fingers). There's the factor of arm length to consider also, and overall height, but they...

Double Bass Albert Nürnberger bass bow

Keep in mind that with inflation, $125 in 1961 is $886 in 2009 dollars.

    Double Bass bow sizes

Bass bows vary a good bit, but I measured a 3/4 bow in my shop a few days ago and it was just short of 28 inches from the tip to the end of the shaft, not including the bow screw.

Double Bass Detached bass bar repair question

Don't worry about being sloppy with glue inside. You can't see it when the top is on and it won't harm anything. :) Looks like it should hold up well. I would also encourage you to get the top on as soon as you think it is safe. With basses, once you take the top off, the ribs start moving...

    Double Bass What's wrong?

If your tailpiece is using a sacconi (black plastic looking) for a tailgut, you can adjust the length with the brass screws. If it is aircraft cable with blocks smashed to secure it, you might be out of luck. You can always put a new one on however that is shorter or longer.

    Double Bass Neck set wrong

There's no fix besides resetting the neck. Unless you make a bridge from scratch (no blanks) you're not going to find a blank that has an extra long foot on just one side. ;) Unless the positioning of the bridge is off by more than 1/2 inch or so I would leave it as is. It's a lot of work (read...

    Double Bass String ID?

Agreed, I wouldn't worry about the possibility of making the mistake of buying them. Those color codes don't ring any bells with any standard-name manufacturer I've ever seen.

    Double Bass D'Addario Zyex

Interesting results, considering their violin and viola counterparts are some of the warmest, softest, and lowest volume strings I've ever played on. To make them sound good you'd have to have the brightest instrument ever made. Seems the bass strings are polar opposite.

    Double Bass What's wrong?

Is it actually a wolf tone? A wolf is a warbling sound, like an oscillation, rapidly going back and forth between pitches.

    Double Bass What's wrong?

Wolf eliminators are usually 1 per instrument on the string creating the highest level of wolf tone. Wolfs are fairly rare for basses. I don't even carry bass wolf eliminators in my shop. Most cellos will have one, some violas, and rarely violins. On the cello and viola the wolf eliminator...

Double Bass Upright bass- the most expensive hobby ever!

I'd say space tourism would probably be one of the most expensive hobbies out there. At $900 it's hard for me to recommend the repair since, as Eric pointed out, the SB80 isn't that far away. Just make sure you double and triple check the fingerboard all the way up for buzzes when pizzing...

    Double Bass Another man's treasure

I'll second Mr. Tucker's entire post. Was my idea before I started reading your post. @ OP The reason you are having problems with the purfling is because the top is laminated. The thin sheets of wood, once exposed, have virtually no anchor to the rest of the wood. The best thing you could do...

    Double Bass What's wrong?

You can also try a sound post adjustment. It's not as likely a fix as Mark's suggestions, but it's fairly cheap and easy to get a luthier to knock your post around a bit while you try the notes you are having issues with every few bumps. You might want to get this done anyway if you solve the...
