How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

That's a good way of looking at surveys - this one is not randomized (among bass guitar owners). The respondents are self-selected. But allow me to posit a different thesis: it's possible that reluctant or underreporting respondents are bass players who own more, not fewer, basses. They...

How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

I ran the numbers through Excel. The median is 4, meaning half the respondents own four or more, and half own four or less. The average is over 6.

    Genzler Amplification Club

I had an outdoor gig last night and although we were under a half-roof and an awning, the sun managed to stream in through the side and land on my Magellan. I used my guitar stand and a rag to create a little curtain that blocked about 80% of the rays. The outdoor temperature was a humid 85+...

    Genzler Amplification Club

That looks awesome. I did an outdoor gig on Thursday using my Magellan 350 with 2 Orange 1x12" cabs. It handled the outdoor venue with ease. We were on a wooden stage so there was some booziness at first, but I was able to adjust it out with the (amber) contouring feature. It's a really nice...

Same philosophy here. And lately, my Stingray has stayed at home. It just doesn't sound as good as the others, and the neck keeps getting out of whack. The Fenders, however, are rock-solid and reliable. Perfect gigging basses. My Yamaha is too new to judge.

Yamaha BBP34 vs Fender P Bass

I have a Precision AmPro 1 and it's a great all-around bass. It's really flawless and I cannot find fault with it in terms of build quality and sound. My only complaint is that I like the Jazz neck better. The P neck is wider at the nut, of course, and that's intentional. It's enough...

Yamaha BBP34 vs Fender P Bass

I just took deliver of the BBP34 a few days ago and am familiarizing myself with it. The strings are new, of course, and so I'm going to give it some time - and sweat and gunk - before I render a decision on a comparison with my Fender P and Jazz basses (respectively, AmPro I and AmPro 2). At...

How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

I sold two bass guitars, bought one, so I'm down by one for a total of four. I implemented a rule on myself: keep it if I use it for gigs, sell it if I don't. With this guiding philosophy in mind, I might ratchet down to three basses and stay there. Here's the thinking, fully expressed...

How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

Just scrolling through and I saw this. Great bass, but just one? Aren't you worried about needing a spare for gigs? I'm working my collection down to three (at five right now) but I can't see going to one because I've had bass breakdowns and I can't go without a gigging instrument. I do...

How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

Well, I'm thinking of a shakeup for my collection of five. Here is what I own: Fender Am Pro I Precision (flat wounds) Fender Am Pro II Jazz Fender Ultra II Jazz Ernie Ball MM Stingray Special I Fender Am Vintage II '54 Precision I am definitely selling the Vintage II Precision, and might...

    Genzler Amplification Club

Gig went great. The Genzler was an improvement. I set the EQ at 12:00 and experimented with the contour. Nothing drastic; i.e., exactly what I wanted. And my Jazz bass sounded like a Jazz bass: growl where I wanted it, thump where I wanted it, and no boominess.

    Genzler Amplification Club

I just bought a Genzler Magellan 350 and will be using it tonight for a club gig. It's not a huge space, and we have sound (so I'll be using the DI), but I'm looking forward to an improvement over my current bass amp, an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. Right, highly rated and coveted Aguilar. But...

Why did you replace the Reverends? I was thinking of buying one (the Decision P), if I sell one of my existing basses.

How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

I have 5 now. I've hit a limit: to keep a bass, I need to use it for gigs at least once every two months. I have one bass that I'm not using to gig but I love it because it's well made and beautiful. If I were to change my perspective to view it as a piece of precision (corporate)...
