    Double Bass Karl Knilling Bucharest

There’s another thread on this subject: 'Identify a Knilling ?' TL;DR - serial numbers are randomly assigned on the Knillings. I did get a response when I emailed the company via their website. Perhaps they can assist.

    Double Bass Evah Pirazzi medium

FWIW, my recollection is the first portion of the megathread is focused on the “Orchestral” set as the Weichs were not created until a little bit later. I’m currently using the mediums and have had the set on for a few years and still enjoying them very much. After trying both sets, I prefer...

Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part III

Still using the Mittel set. Went back to them after years on CH Chordas and a couple years on Spiros. For me, I find them to be a perfect middle ground between those extremes in a jazz context. In recent years I have been studying classical and digging into the bow and they have been working...

    Double Bass Weight balance question

I know there are a few different schools of thought, but I was taught and continue to stand balanced between both feet with no lean one way or the other. The bass leans into me with the endpin placed about left arms length out. I found the physical aspect of bass playing to be difficult to...

Double Bass Jazz bassists before pickups and amps.

If you are playing with sensitive musicians who are listening, I do not find an amp necessary nor do I miss it. If I’m playing with folks who aren’t listening, no amount of amplification improves the experience.

Double Bass Upright Bass Stand for Stage

I haven’t had a weld break issue with mine and it’s been in use for over 10 years. I did have issues with the tubing wearing through and chewing up my bass as you describe, but I found a replacement kit (through Gollihur is my recollection) which had thicker tubes and have had no issues on this...

    Double Bass Piano/guitar-less trio recordings

I’d add the Trio Jeepy album by Branford Marsalis with Milt Hinton and Jeff Tain Watts.

    Double Bass Joe Martin

Reviving an old thread. Caught him last night as part of the Mark Turner Quartet. Joe was outstanding and the interplay between him and drummer Jonathon Pinson was a real treat. Definitely recommend catching that group.

Double Bass NYC jazz upright bassist, noise complaint.

Agree 100% with checking the terms of your lease before responding to landlord. May be something in there that’s helpful or hurtful to your cause, but you need to know it regardless.

Double Bass NYC jazz upright bassist, noise complaint.

FWIW: Rather than posting 802 on your door, I would recommend responding to your landlord along the lines of: 1. thank you for bringing this to your attention and that you will no longer approach the neighbors regarding the noise complaint issues and that you kindly request your neighbors do...

Double Bass How I get a bigger sound?

My teacher once said if you’re playing in time and in tune, they could hear you from the back of Yankee Stadium. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but I would second the advice here as it aligns with my experience that getting a big sound is the result of: a relaxed physical approach, intentional...

Double Bass How do you get music into ASD these days ?

Just checked and it appears that the ones through Apple Music do let me change speed but do not let me change pitch. I recall that one’s I imported through cd or mp3 did used to let me change pitch, but apparently it’s not a feature I use much as I hadn’t noticed it wasn’t working.

Double Bass Memorizing chord charts - what’s your brain doing as you play?

Best way I found to get beyond memorizing is this method. REALLY Learning a tune

Double Bass How do you get music into ASD these days ?

I use it on my iPhone and it accesses my iTunes library and songs I download through my Apple Music subscription without issue. I find it helpful to make an Apple Playlist of whatever I’m currently working through so it’s easier to find.

    Double Bass A confession - I'm illiterate

My advice: Be upfront with your teacher about where you’re at. They will very likely work with you where you’re at. If you are interested in digging into reading ahead of time - great, enjoy it! - but, reading is something that takes time and practice and isn’t a skill which can be crammed...
