Second hand is definitely the way to go. You will get so much more for your money, especially of you dont mind something a little heavier.

Whatever option you take, make sure it has an aux in so that you can practice with backing music, drum machine etc. I'd go with the phil jones bass buddy or cafe walter, both really good quality headphone amps. Cost a bit more, but not ridiculously expensive either. If that's too speedy then...

Go for the ray. I have a stingray hh and a sadowsky rv4- pjh which isn't a million miles away from a precision American deluxe. If I could only have one it'd be the ray, more versatile IMO and you get that fantastic musicman quality. Their guitars just feel and play right.

If you want access to an almost unlimited library, just download a midi player (e.g. sweet midi for ipad). You can then google search for midi tracks of any songs you are interested in and use the midi tracks as backing. As its midi, you can control each instrument e.g. turn off the bass track...
