Double Bass DB forum "what books are you reading" thread

+1 for Ross MacDonald's Lew Archer books. I'm also a big fan of Richard Stark's (Donald Westlake) "Parker" series. The prose is as taut and bare-boned as fiction gets. Nothing remotely sentimental about Parker or the stories. The first book, "Hunter," has been made into a movie twice, titled...

Double Bass Do you listen to recorded music?

I believe there is a corollary between the idea that if one wishes to be a great writer, one needs to be a great reader, and the idea that if one wishes to be a great player, one needs to be a great listener.

Double Bass Talk me out of buying a Felix

Wow. I didn't realize that that comment shamed anyone. I didn't realize someone would infer a slight in it, either. I also didn't realize how thin-skinned some folks around here are. I'll include a trigger warning next time I post anything.

Gosh, didn't know I was stepping on a nerve. Just a general comment about a general trend I see.

Double Bass Talk me out of buying a Felix

When it comes to all this gear that is so enthusiastically endorsed here on Talkbass, I have a rule of thumb: I do some research to see if any of the players I really admire are using any of it. Most of the time the answer is "no." Then I go back to practicing...with no amplification.

Phil Lesh Appreciation Society: Enter the Philzone... v2.0

Hate to be a contrarian, but transcribing a line Phil plays not-for-note will get you much closer to what you love about his style than any half-arsed, quick-pick version of it. There's a reason for the note choice, a reason for the rhythmic placement, a reason for the line contour. This all...

Steve Swallow: perfect walking technique for bass guitar?

Dr., That approach on fretless, using fingers, probably will not give you the same front end bite that Steve gets using round-wound strings and a copper pick.

Jason, Have you used the combo without the extension for up-right? Thoughts? Thanks. Mark

Double Bass Developing a lighter right hand touch?

I always found it ironic that Keith Jarrett would often complain in interviews about hating electric instruments, not wanting to see cables around him while the trio was playing, etc., while his bassist of choice had one of the most amp-driven bass sounds of any of the major players on the scene.

Double Bass Keith Jarrett unable to play?

I knew this quote would stick in certain people's craws! But to me it's just Keith being Keith, and I wouldn't expect anything different from him. Is it an untrue statement? You'd have to ask the next-generation of jazz pianists after Keith.

Double Bass Keith Jarrett unable to play?

Yes. A very kind TBer sent me the article. I am heart-broken.
