The heroes who defined your tone

I was fifteen or sixteen and had never heard of the Minute Men or fIREHOSE, and was really reluctant to listen to "the establishment." So when I heard "alternative" types talk about mike watt I was skeptical. And then I actually bought "Ballhog or Tug-Boat?" Throaty open A-string slide up to...

    Who is your music idol?

On Duff: The guy's no fool. He was an original investor of Starbuck's, and now has a finacial planning business aimed specifically to "sideman" musicians in bands that suddenly find themselves "in the money." I've got nothing but respect for Duff... and I eek out that "Appitite" still holds up...

    Your favourite unknown bassist?

You know it, baby. Played on a few Television post-projects. Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine don't speak, but Fred Smith and Billy Ficca seem to pop up on a lot of their solo stuff. I always like Fred Smith; he has a good, like I said, "bouncey" feel to what he played. He turned down Blondie...

Double Bass Does electric bass fingering work on double bass? No.

I totall agree. In no way was I saying that 1-2-3-4 should be taught outright, not even on bass guitar. I learned Karol Kaye style and Smandil at the same time, so I'm a bastard, and I love it. "Joe Fields" would be my name in A Song of Ice and Fire.

    Your favourite unknown bassist?

Fred Smith, that guy is/was pretty good. Nice, bouncy bass lines and good feel.

Double Bass ouchh blistering finger tips

I heat a sewing needle with a lighter for ten seconds, then puncture the blister and drain it. By the time the dead skin breaks off you should have a pretty tough layer of skin underneath. Working in theater, and doing twelve hour tech rehearsles, I get blisters still after 17 years.

Double Bass Does electric bass fingering work on double bass? No.

I know that Stanly Clarke uses four on the board when playing double bass (which I would do if I had giant hands), and I've always used 1-2-4 on bass guitar, that's just the way I was taught. Karol Kaye's method of teaching BG is basically Simandl with a few tweaks for differences between the...

    Anyone else wish Fender..

As far as I know, this would be something new... A Telecaster Deluxe bass with two humbuckers, four knobs and a three-way switch system.

Loudest Bass Rig That You Have Heard or Know of.

I have no idea what Lou Barlow was using as an amp (maybe some sort of Marshall for a bit of fuzz and a standard rig for definition), but when I saw Dinosaur, Jr., it was as if Lou and Jay were competing with one another as to whom could loudest. I couldn't even hear the drummer, Murph. And they...

    Downfall of local music stores

I'm extremely lucky to have Crazy Music, Palin Music, the Blue Guitar, and the Guitar Trader all in one town of about 100,000. And even though it's a chain, it's still a franchise chain, so I'm going to include Music-Go-Round because it's locally owned. The local pawn magnate is a musician, so...

    SVT love

Here's the thing: If you're going Ampeg 8x10 cab, man up and go all tube. Since you can afford the cab, you can afford the head. Go vintage and scoure eBay, Music-Go-Round, Zzounds, Craigslist, Backpage, or whatever else. Look in your local Sunday classifiedes.

Swiss Army Knife kind of Bass? Which one should I get?

If you were looking at a G&L US, you might want to consider a Yamaha Super Bass. There's one at the local Music-Go-Round here in Columbia for $600, I think. It's a big heavy bass with a big glossy maple neck and finger board. The thing about any used store is: You never know what bad mods are...
