Opinion, who makes the best bass neck?

If I had to pin one brand down to making comfortable, reliable, durable necks with excellent quality control, I’d have to say: Ibanez. They’re typically on the thinner side, so not necessarily for everyone, but they do make a wide variety, and I’ve never had to handle a warranty repair or...

Killing it with only a Fretless Mexican Jazz?

Get both, eventually. No need to spend more, if you’re patient you can land on good copies of all those basses. If you go too low end, the electronics and pickups are what really suffer, so don’t go toooo cheap. I’ve demo’d the SBMM and it was really cool, no recollection exactly what variant...

Headphones for practicing: Open vs Closed

closed, if you plan on using them anywhere that isn’t a controlled environment. Why stress your ears by needing to turn up if it’s noisy, and imposing your music on others is just tacky. If always in a controlled environment, the comfort of open backs alone is good enough reason to go that way...

    tape wounds and noise

yep, they looked and felt different than the metallic blue ones I used for years as well. I haven’t tried the neons, will give them a shot.

    finger exercisers/stretchers

I don’t know what the hell that second thing is, but I’d steer clear of that one. the first one is actually in the ballpark of an exercise tool I used after a hand injury, but I’m not sure that’s a movement that needs to be exercised that way. Grip exercisers and things like that are also used...

Have you ever lied about your age to get a gig?

James Brown lied about his damn age. Do it. Yolo, as the kids say.

    Error in stringing...............

f*** these aging eye problems my friend. I seriously couldn’t positively tell some guitar strings apart the other day without my damn bifocals on. The string will probably hold just fine, good luck to you ;)

    tape wounds and noise

yes, the one string trick would work, provided you’re always in contact with it. Simply grounding the ball end to the bridge wouldn’t do anything, your body needs to connect to the circuit ground. Keeping the heel of your hand on the bridge would also work; I would venture a guess that a lot of...

Am I Being Too OCD? (Gretsch Truss Rod Cover Involved)

P Bass for Studio. What's Best Bass for Live Shows?

By the way, that bloated bass is precisely what doesn’t work so great in the studio, hence the preponderance of P bass love. That said... you can always turn the bass down... use a HPF... hone your technique... etc... but failing those, a P really does make things easier in the studio ;)

P Bass for Studio. What's Best Bass for Live Shows?

Haven’t played one in a while, but back when I was in music retail I might have borrowed a few instruments for gigs to “try before I buy,” and active Ibanez basses really popped sonically, and their onboard eq’s worked great. You could really dial in some air moving bass. I’m sure many...

Anyone else becoming a bass snob?

As I get older (wiser? Lol), I’m getting WAY less snobby re instruments, and embracing their differences rather than looking for “the one.” While I certainly respect premium brands and builders who put out excellent, quality controlled products, and have no intention of relinquishing my few...

Playing with my neighbor (long rank - warning!)

It’s a brutal problem, and I think it has to do with treating songs as strings of chords, rather than songs with melodies and progressions that seek resolution. It’s nothing unusual to have beginners blow the form on the blues, because they’re not thinking of it as musical phrases, they just...
