I just can't seem to stop making mistakes...

Have you always tried to play it with the same fingering? Often I find that if something is difficult I can change it to a different shape and fit the groove better. As a ridiculously simple example, a 1-6-5-6 on G could be played (String/Fret) D/5-A/7-A/5-A/7 but you might get a slightly...

Is it cool to announce your next gig, at a different venue?

Good business for us, bad business for the venue maybe. And if the venue resents it and refuses to have us back, it's also bad business for us. That's my dilemma. I am going to drop by and visit the owner sometime during the week -- customer relations, doncha know? -- and maybe I'll just ask...

Is it cool to announce your next gig, at a different venue?

We did our first gig with a new singer last Saturday night, at at the end he did all the good "we are...", "we had fun, hope you did", "hope you come see us again..." stuff, but then he closed with "next Saturday we'll be at...". I kinda cringed when he did that, because I don't think it's...

Bass Players are Their Own Worst Enemy!

Dood, I don't play for money either; I play for free. But they have to freakin' pay me, and pay me well, to haul gear and to get there early enough to piss around setting up and sound-checking the PA. I do perfectly well with a little Ampeg PF-500 and a 600W Carvin 2x10. Any time I need more...

    Please explain this to me...

A single pickup has two screws and two solder points. A split pickup has four screws and four solder points (IIRC; it's years since I did my own upgrades). But 80% of the work is in removing and replacing the pickguard, and they only have to do that once, so I think they are screwing you.

Tiny Head, Same Big Speaker Cabs: What's the Point?

I searched long and wide for just the right roll-on luggage. The one I settled upon has the wheels and retractable handle. Contains two Ampeg PF-500 amps, a Markbass passive DI (plan C, never used), my voice mic, a cabinet mic and mic stand (rarely used), and a backup mic, two power cables, a...

Do you dance when you play bass?

To the extent the stage has enough room, absolutely. And if there is no room at all, I still kinda bob up and down. It's all about setting the mood; if the audience sees you are having fun and moving around they are all the more likely to get up on the dance floor and start moving, themselves...

New Drummer won't stop staring at my fingers.

How new? Maybe he'll lighten up once he adjusts to your style and learns your material. Or start playing with a pick... ;)

    Why Rhythm?

That's a very strange question, because rhythm is one of the three components of music: Melody, harmony, and rhythm. I would guess rhythm came first, then melody, then harmony, but there are archaic forms like Gregorian chants, which are comprised of melody and harmony but no discernable rhythm.

Need luthier near Carolina Piedmont to convert fretted P-Bass to fretless.

I'll accept your professional opinion on that -- you know better than I do. But I notice that the strings on my fretless Ibanez are way closer to the fingerboard than those on my fretted P-Basses. With the frets pulled and the slots filled, and just a thin coat of epoxy in the fingerboard, the...
