    Zdenek Gubb

Just saw Twiddle at Peach Fest in Scranton this summer. Was mesmerized by Gubb. Super funky, melodic. He def makes that band go!

    Bass Player RIP...

When I started playing just over two years ago, I found over 100 BP mags for sale at a local music store - as early as their very first issue, and up through the 90's. Someone had sold them to the store. I got them for a buck apiece, and have read each of them cover to cover (more than once)...

    Foam padding near the bridge??

Thank you. The historical context is very helpful, as I really didn't understand the "why". I tried it out last night with some foam, and found that it really gives the E/A/D stings a lower, muffled, really cool sound, but the G string wouldn't vibrate at all. I pulled back the foam so it just...

    Foam padding near the bridge??

Not sure if I'm even wording this correctly but here goes.... I recently read in a book about playing "blues bass" that it is common for bassists in this genre to place a small piece of foam under the strings at the bridge, in order to get a better "blues sound". I am a newbie to bass (have...

Who was the player(s) that made you want to play bass?

GEDDY! X100! I also had a "Duck Dunn" moment, however watching the Blues Brothers movie as a kid. "Sweet Home Chicago" baby!

    Underappreciated Bassists in famous bands

Great topic, great list. I love the down and dirty, solid as a rock pulse of Cliff Williams AND Mark Evans from ACDC. Listen to "Soul Stripper" - one of my faves.

    RIP Walter Becker

What a shame. Super groovy, cool music. My very first exposure to jazz as a young guy was Steely Dan. Got hold of a copy of Aja and played it until it disintegrated. RIP. Another great gone too soon.

Reelin' in the Years... Osmond style

I'd like to watch this with Becker and Fagan just to see their faces!

Difference between precision bass and jazz bass

I bought a Fender Squire P-Bass as my first bass and still play it almost everyday. For around $200, it's a quality bass, and ideal for a beginner in that it has a great sound and won't break the bank. In my humble opinion of course...

    playing with your fingers

I learned with fingers, and have tried some pick playing here and there. I find playing with the pick very difficult, and something I tend to avoid...

Thank you McG. I think I'm hooked! :bassist:

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, set 3 - everyone's drunk now!

Picked up the bass a year and a half ago, and played out for the very first time last weekend at a very tiny "festival" (more like a fundraiser) held at a kind of hippie/arts/sustainable living commune in the 1000 Islands. We played about an hour and a half, two sets. First set was some Petty...

I need to learn how to play blues within a week.

The 1-4-5 is a fairly basic pattern that you can learn in five minutes. However, it takes time (and feel) to really flesh it out with walks and fills between the changes ala Duck Dunn and one of my all-time faves already mentioned in this thread Mr. Tommy Shannon. Have fun - I love playing blues...
