I bought a Fender Squire P-Bass as my first bass and still play it almost everyday. For around $200, it's a quality bass, and ideal for a beginner in that it has a great sound and won't break the bank. In my humble opinion of course...

The 1-4-5 is a fairly basic pattern that you can learn in five minutes. However, it takes time (and feel) to really flesh it out with walks and fills between the changes ala Duck Dunn and one of my all-time faves already mentioned in this thread Mr. Tommy Shannon. Have fun - I love playing blues...
