    New Boss OC-5 Octave

The 100% wet OC2 sound seemed very close to me. Unless they are boosting, there will be a perceptual volume drop just thanks to Fletcher-Munson. Levels always always looks way better in a DAW than you'd think. What I'm not clear on is whether it's all digital or just the poly mode. The big...

    Weber amps / HiWatt

I've always wanted a totally unaffordable HiWatt 200 and Weber amps have accidentally crossed my radar. I'm in the UK so getting gear from Germany is relatively straightforward and safe, but the somewhat minimalist website is not too informative. It seems like a one guy operation. Has anyone...

Do I need compression for fingerstyle bass?

I use one habitually but I play into a lot of shared gear and I find it to be a useful safety net with iffy bass heads (low headroom). I also run some synthy effects with heavy filtering and find the comp very useful in stabilising the signal and preventing clipping into some older pedals not...

    Boss ES-8 ES-5 Thoughts

This is correct. I got tripped up the same way. If you look in the manual, it is there, but they don't exactly advertise and its a non-obvious omission IMO.

    Eq pedal

Another vote for the Source Audio Programmable EQ. I just got one. 4 presets, extended 8 band range for Bass (62 Hz), +/- 18dB. Dead quiet. MIDI PC access to the 4 presets and bypass, plus a bunch of CC options. Their tech support is top notch too.

    Envelope Filter 2019

I've previously owned the MXR BEF and like others, I found it to only do one thing. However it did that one thing extremely well and at the time it was exactly what I needed. It's band pass only though, rather than low pass. Hence the clean blend. I've also used the DOD Bass Synth Wah, but found...

Your Best Pedal Purchase of 2019?!

I'm holding out for the Source Audio C4. If it tracks as well as the demos suggest, it will replace about 4 pedals in one go and - from the look of it - so much more.

Order - which goes first octave or distortion?

My pref is to run them in parallel, so they both get the clean signal and the octave sits below the dirt. Minimises tracking issues, plus no bloat in the fuzz. For the really synthy stuff, I often run an Okto Nojs (parallel fuzz/octave) in parallel with a Mastotron for additional harmonic...

    Genz Benz footswitch query

This is exactly how an ES5 works! It has 2 x 1/4" TS / TRS contact closure outputs, specifically for controlling amp channel switching. They can be set to either latching or momentary. I don't want to run a separate footswitch in addition to my effects board due to the footprint.

    Genz Benz footswitch query

I've been offered a Shuttle 12.2 as a trade and I'm quite interested in the channel and pre-shape switching. However, I'd be looking to replace the some of the footswitch functionality with by Boss ES5 for live work. I'd need to wire up some sort of DIN > TS / TRS cable, but first I'd need to...

    Boss ES-8 ES-5 Thoughts

You don't need to do it like this. If you set it up in the menu so there is a parallel link across the desired pedal, only with no loop number defined in it, you get a clean blend. No need to reserve an empty loop or to blend with an 'off' pedal. It's not explained like this in the manual though.

Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Just out of interest, what MIDI cables are you using. They look to be very neat and right angled. I'm trying a One Control cable, but I'm always looking for neat alternatives

Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

That was my first solution, but I didn't like the stress on the plugs when I shut the lid of the flight case. Plus it didn't look super neat. In the end I just got a bigger board and ran the SA Manta and the Boss DD500 after the looper using MIDI. DD500 is always last and Manta is always second...

Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Depends on your board and exactly which cables you have. I've been using EBS (flat) type and that required me to shunt the ES5 backwards so the cables could be routed downwards between the Pedaltrain rails. This works but does waste some board space. I'll probably get a Boss solderless kit...

Pedals that you hate but everyone loves, and vice versa

Most of the disappointments (hate is too strong) I've had, I can put down to playing in band vs. playing at home / listening to solo demos and the sheer cost of a lot of boutique gear vs. what you are getting. Fortunately, I dislike the Darkglass distortion sound because I'd never pay those...
