my .2c is the Boss ES-5 or ES-8 are the best midi controllers out there. Changed what i could do live drastically. Could not recommend them enough to people looking for a loop selectore/midi controller
For real though. And I’m not a huge studio-heavy, 2000 song MIDI hound, either. They just make possibilities easy to acquire and saveable.
Find a dull night, grab a beer and the manual and spend 2-3 hours with it. You’ll be surprised at what you can do and how intuitive they are.
You guys should shut up. I've been good at not buying n ES-5 since they were released, and I'm trying to keep it that way.
Can the ES-5 do stereo and do many folks use that feature? Never really thought about it before, but many of the SA pedals are stereo capable right?
No the ES-5 does not do stereo. I never felt I needed this feature though so really was not a sticking point. However the ES-8 has a couple of stereo loops.
Well I never used stereo before so probably done need it anyway. If I want to record stereo then I could just bypass the return on the ES-5.
I use a MS-3 with my Source Audio stuff, it’s nice to have the extra effects when need be. Plus, I really only need the three loops, one for the Aftershock, one for the the Manta (soon to be Spectrum when it comes out!) and my Lunar, then just use some of the routing within the MS-3 to do combos of the three.
Not to derail an SA thread, but it's pertinent in terms of it being a loop/midi controller for these pedals. I've been eyeballing the ES-5 and MS-3 since they came out. Aside from the number of loops and the multi-effects included with the 3, are there any glaring differences between the two? I noticed the MS-3 doesn't have a tuner output, and maybe it only has MIDI out (not In & Out like the ES-5/8 models)?
The ES-5 also has reorderable loops. The three loops on the MS-3 are in a fixed order and are blocked together; you can reorder the built-in effects around the loops, but you can't reorder the loops or place built-in effects between the loops.
Depends on your board and exactly which cables you have. I've been using EBS (flat) type and that required me to shunt the ES5 backwards so the cables could be routed downwards between the Pedaltrain rails. This works but does waste some board space. I'll probably get a Boss solderless kit, because they allow straight or right angled routing. Blu bro's board looks super neat though!
My ES-5 is risen up off of floor height to allow the right angle jacks plenty of room. You could always point them up (not down) if this is not possible.
I have a pedaltrain as well, that’s the problem I was thinking about. I’m using hosa cables, the head is a bit wide so not sure they will fit side by side, but I guess I’ll find out soon. I hit a sample from EBS at NAMM (or Warwick, can’t remember) so I’ll see if those can work. If not, time to buy cables
Blu bro, what did you use to rise the ES-5?
That was my first solution, but I didn't like the stress on the plugs when I shut the lid of the flight case. Plus it didn't look super neat. In the end I just got a bigger board and ran the SA Manta and the Boss DD500 after the looper using MIDI. DD500 is always last and Manta is always second last in my chain so I don't need reordering options for these two.

My whole board was made by me with wood,so I made everything to fit my pedals and then put it all permanently into a road case that was originally designed for a mixing desk.
Just out of interest, what MIDI cables are you using. They look to be very neat and right angled. I'm trying a One Control cable, but I'm always looking for neat alternatives
